Principal's Corner
Hello Families, Caregivers, and Students,
Wow! Can you believe it? This is the last month of the school year! It is amazing how quickly time passes. Please take a moment to think back to your student at the beginning of the school year. Maybe look back through some photos on your phone or social media to see what your student looked like in August/September of this school year. Now take a look at your student today. They have grown and changed, haven't they? Think about what they have shared that they have been learning this year and how they have grown academically as well. I hope that you see the growth and development that the Northtowne Staff sees in our Knights!
Early congratulations to our class of 5th grade students who are nearing the end of their elementary days! The transition to middle school brings many changes. Among those changes are a bigger school building, switching classes throughout the day, and larger student bodies. If our Northtowne Knights remember the tools of being respectful, responsible, and focused (RRF) I know it will help them positively navigate many challenges and opportunities found in middle school. Good luck to our 5th graders!
Summer is a great time to relax after a successful year of learning and growth. Summer is also a great time to explore a learn more in personal interest areas. I suggest visiting the neighborhood public library often. While there, sign up your student for the summer reading program and fun activities that will be offered throughout June, July and early August. Also visit your local Metro Park and pick up a schedule of free, fun activities for the whole family to take part in all summer long. Sharon Woods Metro Park on Cleveland Ave at Schrock Rd is the closest Metro Park to the school and there are many others in nearby areas.
Have and excellent and safe Summer,
Mr. Taylor
Using the Panorama Survey Feedback
At Northtowne, we really do look at the feedback given on the Panorama Surveys. Caregivers, students (3rd grade and above), and staff all take versions of the survey. We would like to share some of the themes that were noticed during the analysis of the survey responses.
First, we had 80 caregivers complete the caregivers survey. This is significantly more responses that we have had any time in the past 3 years. Thank you for your involvement!! Next, we would like to highlight some positive aspects of our school. We will also address some areas where we can continue to improve.
The good news is that it is easy to highlight several positives from Northtowne Elementary. They include:
In all three overall categories of Barriers to Engagement, School Climate, and School Fit caregivers rated Northtowne more positively than the average ratings in Region 5 schools and the District as a whole.
a 92% positive rating on the school being welcoming to caregivers
a 91% positive rating on the school's efforts to communicate with caregivers
Our areas with room to improve showed common themes from caregiver and student surveys. The themes that were most notable fell into the overall survey categories of School Climate and School Fit. We have come up with the following action items to address these areas. Northtowne Elementary is committed to these action items and the ways we anticipate they will make a good school even better.
- Improved communication around school rules and the likely consequences when rules are broken. The information communicated will cover both rule type and the associated severity scale information that is considered when a consequence is being selected.
- We have been doing a trial of Teachers Acknowledging Greatness (TAG) awards this school year. This has been focused on recognizing positive student behavior. We will continue and expand TAG next year. We will also add a staff recognition component called Staff Heroes Illustrating Northtowne Excellence (SHINE). For the staff recognitions there will be a Google Form created and shared with all staff and caregivers. Staff may recognize one another and caregivers may also recognize any staff member in the building for positive impacts that have been made.
Watch for the full implementation of the above action items as the 2024-25 school year begins this August 21st!

Diversity Corner
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
In 1992, the month of May was designated by President George H. Bush as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The annual celebration honors the many contributions and accomplishments of Asian Americans, Pacific Islander Americans, and Native Hawaiians. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. (senate.gov)
Like all cultures, Asian heritage is a diverse and ever-changing concept that has varied meanings to different communities and generations. During Asian Heritage Month we are invited:
- to celebrate traditional as well as contemporary Asian-American culture, which includes poetry, dances, sports, music and art;
- to learn about the many achievements and contributions of Americans of the diverse Asian heritage that makes up our communities; and
- to understand the historical journeys and ongoing struggles of diverse Asian communities. (etfo.ca)
During Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, our Nation celebrates the diversity of cultures, breadth of achievement, and remarkable contributions of these communities; of brave immigrants who, motivated by the promise of possibilities, picked up their lives and found new homes here; of native peoples who have stewarded these lands since time immemorial; and of community leaders shaping a brighter future for us all. Throughout our history, they have represented the bigger story of who we are as Americans and embodied the truth that our diversity is our strength as a Nation (whitehouse.gov).
Check out the information, located later in the newsletter, on how Columbus is celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month during the Asian Festival. There are multiple days of different activities you can experience.
Counselor's Corner
As we wrap up the school year, students from Kindergarten to 5th grade are working on solving social problems with STEP. STEP is a problem solving tool that gives students a concrete set of steps to follow when they encounter problems. STEP stands for Stop, Think, Explore, and Pick.
Students are encouraged to STOP and breathe (or find another way to calm down). Often times the problems we face cause us to feel upset. When students are having these feelings, they often don’t make the best choices. The first step is calm our bodies down so we can make good choices.
Next is THINK. Students are encouraged to think about all of their choices. If we just have one idea to solve the problem, that choice might not be a good one. Students have been learning to think about brainstorming more than one idea.
The E in STEP is EXPLORE. Students have been practicing exploring the outcomes of their choices. By thinking ably what could happen, they can weigh the positives and negatives of each choice.
The last step is to PICK. Students are encouraged to pick a choice that gets the best possible outcome.
Notes From Nurse Cassie
End of year notes from Nurse Cassie include vaccination reminders, area health clinic information, dental information, and summer safety reminders.
Vaccinations:
Over the summer families should to check to be sure that all school aged children have their required vaccinations. It is also important that the full series of vaccinations be given. Some vaccines require administration more than once. For instance, polio requires 4 vaccinations and measles/mumps/rubella requires 2 vaccinations. To check your student's vaccination status contact their pediatrician or Columbus Public Health. You can get many vaccinations for free at Columbus Public Health. Call 614-645-8180 to schedule. Columbus Public Health location and hours are:
240 Parsons Ave.
Mondays 8 am -4:15 pm
Tuesdays 10 am - 6:15 pm
Wednesdays 8 am - 11:15 am
Thursdays and Fridays 8 am - 4:15 pm
Area Health Clinic:
In addition to services provided by Columbus Public Health families may also use the School Based Health Center at Northland High School (1919 Northcliff Dr.). This clinic is run through a partnership between the school district and Nationwide Children's Hospital. The clinic is open throughout the summer on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To make an appointment call (614) 355-2590.
School Smiles Dental care:
The date for our 2024-25 school year School Smiles dental visit has been scheduled. September 18, 2024 the dental professionals from school smiles will come to the school (like they did this year) to provide dental care during the school day!
Summer Safety Reminders:
Children should be getting regular, daily exercise throughout the summer. Of course, follow any specific doctor recommendations your student may have regarding activity levels and safety while active. In general, kids should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Especially in the summer, be sure that your student is also drinking plenty of water. Also remember things like:
- sunscreen and don't forget to re-apply throughout the day; even dark complexions can be damaged with the sun's UV rays
- helmets when biking
- helmets and pads when skating or skateboarding
- being present and watching children when at pools; swim lessons, if possible are great but even strong swimmers can get into water distress
- do tick checks after being outside; the tiny insects can even be found in city backyards and parks, not just the woods
- stay hydrated with water, this one is worth repeating
If you have any questions about this or other school health related concerns please contact Nurse Cassie at cwalaszek@columbus.k12.oh.us
