A Message from the School Resource Officer
Greetings Legg Middle School students, parents and staff.
With the winter season on us, I would like to remind everyone of the hazards of driving in the winter weather and what extra precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of our students, and that we avoid accidents. With snow, ice, sleet and sometimes rain the roads and parking lots can be hazardous. Some tips to consider; give yourself enough time to get to work or when bringing your children to school. Students, allow extra time in the morning to get to your bus on time. Don't push or shove around the bus, someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt.
Also, in the mornings it can still be dark , wear light/bright colored clothing and walk against traffic , use crosswalks if provided, look both ways before crossing and PAY ATTENTION to your surroundings. Parents, please remind your children of walking safety.
Drivers, stay aware of your surroundings and student walkers, especially Green Street between the high school student parking lot and the middle school. It presents issues as we have buses pulling out of the middle school and vehicles going or coming from the high school parking lot. Therefore, it can cause confusion at times, and with the winter weather it makes it worse. We have students that are crossing over and not always using the crosswalks so please be vigilant!
Students drop off in the parking lot off of Western, use proper lane use , entry and exits into the parking lot and again give yourself time to get there and be aware of other drivers and students that are walking, sometimes it's hard to see with the weather conditions.
Stay safe everyone!!

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Winter break offers a wonderful opportunity for relaxation and family time, but it can also bring challenges for some students. Without the structure of school and daily interactions with friends, many middle schoolers may experience feelings of loneliness or boredom. These emotions are common during long breaks, but there are ways you can help your child stay engaged and supported.
Tips to Support Your Child During Winter Break
Encourage Social Connections: Help your child plan activities with friends or stay connected through calls or video chats. Social interaction is key to combating feelings of isolation.
Create a Daily Routine: While a break from school schedules is welcome, having some structure can prevent boredom and help your child feel more focused and motivated.
Suggest New Activities: Encourage your child to try a new hobby, explore creative outlets like drawing or writing, or take on simple tasks like baking or building something.
Promote Physical Activity: Physical movement, whether it’s a winter walk, sledding, or an indoor workout, can improve mood and reduce stress.
Emphasize Giving Back: Acts of kindness, like volunteering or helping a neighbor, can instill a sense of purpose and positivity during the holiday season.

Youth in Government
L.M.S. Students “Take Over” Michigan’s Government
For many years, each November, nearly 50 students represent Legg Middle School at a three-day Youth in Government conference in Lansing. Youth in Government is a program sponsored by the State YMCA of Michigan that places hundreds of middle school students’, from across the state, in the desks of our state senators and representatives and gives them real-life legislative tasks like debating, passing and rejecting bills according to the parliamentary procedure. The conference also focuses on leadership skills, public speaking, civic engagement, and the value of democracy
Another part of the YIG program is the Political Compromise, where students discussed and compromised on a public policy. In this program, students discussed and debated issues related to assigned policy areas in order to create new, better systems for our state.
All LMS students did an amazing job showing positive leadership and respect to others during the conference. Several students took leadership roles as committee chairs and clerks. One LMS student was also elected as a top leader: Christian Briscoe as Speaker of the House. Several LMS students brought home awards for their outstanding participation, including Beau Somerlott and Cerenity Whitaker. Three bills by LMS delegates Gabriel Chacon, Mya McBride, and Joe Wright were signed into law by the Youth Governor. Congratulations to the entire LMS delegation on an impressive year of Youth in Government!
Tinkercad with Mr. Clark
Students in Mr. Clark's 7th Grade Math class recently learned how to apply their mathematics skills using a Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) program called Tinkercad. Students were able to personalize holiday ornaments with their names. After hearing about the students' interest in CAD, LMS's Woodshop & Technology teacher, Mr. Johnson, was able to donate an older 3D printer to Mr. Clark's classroom for their use for this and future projects. The students were quite excited to see their creations come alive! Mr. Clark plans to continue to supplement the curriculum with additional opportunities for students to learn and discover using CAD and 3D printing. Thank you Mr. Johnson for helping to spread technology education into alternate settings!
