FHS Library Quarterly
Winter 2025
“One of the principles of democracy is an informed citizenry—when you have that ability to have free and unbiased provision of information. Libraries are a trusted source. We are giving citizens an opportunity to have the information to make those informed decisions. [...] Let the books battle it out on the shelves. We have different perspectives, and you can choose.”
― Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, in an interview with Issues in Science and Technology
New in the Library: Mr. Convery's Nature Photography
Swing by the Library's display windows in A-Hall to see an exhibit of nature photographs taken by Silver House VP Mr. Convery. The collection is entitled "What iSee" because all of the photographs were taken on his iPhone during hikes in the area.

Librarian for the Day: Harry!
Harry, cleverly disguised as Mr. Albright on student-teacher swap day, joined us behind the desk to conduct official Library business like checking out books, stamping due-dates, and chasing after people who owe overdue books!

Next Discussion - The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
Our next book discussion will be on January 22nd at 12:00pm in the library.
We'll be discussing, The God of the Woods, by FHS grad Liz Moore (Class of 2001). This mystery novel is about a 13 year old camper who goes missing from her summer camp, and the possible connections to her younger brother's disappearance years earlier.
Email Alison Courchesne to be included in the Google Calendar event for updates.
Our Book Recommendations
Math Teachers Ms. Seiche, Ms. Abreu, Ms. Lincoln, Ms. Killgoar, Ms. Wilgoren & Ms. Fitterer's Book Pick: The Women by Kristin Hannah
Some of us didn't think we enjoyed reading historical fiction, and some used to love historical fiction as children, but we thought we'd outgrown it. But all of us truly enjoyed reading the powerful story ofThe Women by Kristen Hannah. It was one of those "can't put down" books that kept us reading for hours at a time!
(fun fact: this review was collectively authored as a "write-around" by the Math Teachers listed above)
Ms. Courchesne's Book Pick: When the World Tips Over by Jandy Nelson
Ms. Maher's Book Pick:
"Everyone in fifteen-year-old Bella’s life needs something from her. Her mom needs her to help around the house, her dad needs her to not make waves, her ex needs her to not be so much. The only person who never needed anything from her was her grandmother—and now she’s dead. But after Bella gets blackout drunk at a Thanksgiving party and wakes up in the hospital, it’s time to face reality. And for Bella, reality means rehab" (Publisher's description). I don't know if "enjoyed" would be the word I would use to describe this book, but it did captivate me. The author wrote openly and honestly about the struggles Bella faced during her time in rehab, and once she was home again. Not an easy read, but a realistic look at how can alcohol, depression and anxiety can negatively impact our lives.
