A Message from Principal Woofter
October is always a busy month on campus - and it is already halfway over!
Fall Conferences are scheduled for October 24th and 25th. You should have received an email message from your child's teacher providing the link to sign up for a conference time on Thursday, October 11. Both days will be No School Days at the elementary level. We are excited to have a chance to share more about your child’s progress here at Archer Glen! Some families take the long weekend for vacations, but please be aware that teachers are not expected to schedule formal conference make-ups outside of these days. Thank you for understanding.
We are excited to host our fall harvest parties this year! Students will be allowed to wear costumes at school; however, the times for that will vary depending on the class. Your child's teacher will share those details as the date gets closer. Please know that all costumes need to be appropriate (no violence, weapons, fake blood, face masks, or full face paint) and, ideally, something that your child can take on and off fairly or completely independently. Each class will be running their own celebration and those may look different from class to class. In the event that party volunteers are needed, please know that all volunteers will need to have completed the volunteer items share in previous updates. Also note that background checks are taking 2-3 weeks to clear, so if you are hoping to volunteer at the end of the month, please complete those steps ASAP. More information to come from teachers soon!
Just a reminder that November 1 will be a No School day for students. This day is designated as a Professional Development Day for staff. We appreciate your support!
Kindly,
Sarah

Important: What Parents Need to Know About Naloxone and Opioid Safety
Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Sherwood School District, we care deeply about the safety and well-being of all our students. With the rise in opioid use, including fentanyl, we want to keep our community informed. The opioid overdose crisis in Oregon has reached alarming proportions. Since 2019, the number of unintentional overdose deaths has skyrocketed, rising from 280 in 2019 to a staggering 1,392 in 2023. In this letter, we'll explain the dangers of opioids and what we're doing to keep our students safe.
What is an opioid? Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, and many others.
Why are opioids so dangerous? Opioids slow down the actions of the body, such as breathing and heartbeat. Even a single dose of an opioid can cause severe respiratory depression (slowing or stopping of breathing), which can be fatal; taking opioids with alcohol or sedatives increases this risk. Fentanyl is a powerful opioid: a dose as small as a few grains of sand can make a person stop breathing within minutes.
What is naloxone? Naloxone (commonly known as Narcan) blocks the effect of opioids on the body and restores breathing to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped to dangerous levels due to an overdose. Naloxone can quickly be delivered by a nasal spray or injection. Naloxone may be administered in emergency overdose situations, is safe for the person receiving the medication and has no effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system.
What is Sherwood School District doing? Our district provides comprehensive, developmentally appropriate drug and alcohol education. All schools will stock naloxone and necessary medical supplies. In addition, staff are trained to administer naloxone to any person suspected of experiencing an opioid overdose. Anytime naloxone is administered school staff will call 911 and immediately notify the student’s parents or guardian, if applicable.
What can you do as a parent? We understand that talking about opioid use with your child can be challenging. The US Drug Enforcement Administration: One Pill Can Kill Campaign has parent and caregiver resources that may be helpful. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration also offers a Tips for Teens: Opioids handout you can share with your student.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Sherwood School District Health Services Department at health@sherwood.k12.or.us.
Volunteers
The District will be welcoming volunteers back into our school buildings this year. All volunteers will need to complete and have an approved background check on file prior to volunteering (this must be renewed each school year). The background check process can take 7-10 business days, so please allow sufficient processing time if you are planning to volunteer for a specific event.
HelpCounter Volunteer Information
Our Archer Glen Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is creating an updated email list for school information and other ways to support our school. If you are looking to volunteer at Archer Glen this year, please sign up using the link shared here. If you are new to Archer Glen you will need to create a new login. Past volunteers can use their old sign in. (Please note that this link does not work well on your phone so you will need to use another device).
ALL parents will need to fill out their information again as the system gets updated each fall. The registration will ask some questions about volunteer preferences, please still answer the questions and select all activities you might be interested in learning more about!
You can find out more information about how to sign up for volunteer opportunities at Archer Glen using HelpCounter by visiting Archer Glen PAC's Instagram handle here.
