Principal's Notes
Autumn has arrived! As the weather cools and the nights grow longer, we reflect on a fantastic past month and eagerly look ahead to what October has in store.
Last month, we had a successful Parent Orientation and Pizza Night. It was wonderful to see so many families come together, share stories, and make connections. A huge thank you to everyone who participated!
We also had an important visit from the RMFD, who gave a valuable presentation on fire safety. In line with our safety goals, we conducted school-wide drills to ensure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency.
Looking ahead to October, we are excited for our upcoming Movie Night (see details below). A special highlight from last month was our ABLE program’s mock election, where students campaigned and participated in a simulated voting process after learning about the election system in class. The ballots are in, and we can’t wait to announce the winning candidate soon!
As we move into October, we look forward to all the fun and learning the fall season will bring. Stay tuned for more updates, and let’s enjoy the journey together!
Sincerely,
Matt Stary
Principal, Conyers Learning Academy

Fire Prevention Month
Our ABLE and REACH students recently had a fire safety lesson presented by Firefighter Steve from our RMFD.
They learned important safety tips, including what to do in case of a fire emergency. Firefighter Steve visited the class, demonstrating his firefighting gear and equipment. The children were fascinated by his gadgets and uniform.
To reinforce the lessons learned, please discuss fire safety with your child at home. Ensure that your home has working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

Staff Spotlight
Throughout October, we're shining a spotlight on our incredible team of clinicians: counselors, social workers, psychologists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists.
These dedicated professionals work tirelessly to support our students' social, emotional, and academic needs. Their commitment, kindness, and caring nature make them an integral part of the CLA team.
Let's take a moment to appreciate and thank our clinicians for their invaluable contributions to our school community.
Monika Szum - Speech and Language Pathologist
In her free time, Monika enjoys outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, and long walks. She also loves spending time with friends and family, cooking, and traveling.
Monika is passionate about her work and is excited to support our students in achieving their speech and language goals. We're thrilled to have her as part of our team!
Britt Whiting - Occupational Therapist
Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with family, exploring the outdoors through hiking and biking, and visiting playgrounds.
We're thrilled to have Britt join our team and look forward to their contributions to our students' success.
Beth Carlson - Social Worker (ABLE)
Beth is a proud mom of two children: Jamie, an 18-year-old freshman at Harper College, and Joe, a 14-year-old freshman at Fremd. Outside of school, Beth is a busy mom, supporting her kids' activities and volunteering at her church.
When she has free time, she enjoys catching up on shows and finding fun activities for her family. Working at CLA has taught Beth a lot about the unique needs of our students and how to best support them. This experience has also helped her as a mom, providing insights into how to support the sensory needs of her own children.
We're grateful for Beth's dedication and contributions to our school community. Her expertise and compassion are invaluable assets to our programs.
Alisa Zilkic - Counselor (REACH)
Now in her third year at CLA and in the district, Alisa Zilkic has brought her passion and expertise as a counselor to help students overcome challenges and achieve their personal goals.
Outside of school, Alisa is a proud mom of three—a high school freshman, a seventh grader, and a first grader—who keeps busy cheering them on at their sporting events and performances. When she’s not supporting her students or family, Alisa enjoys exploring new places, following Formula 1 races, and soaking up time outdoors.
We are so lucky to have Alisa on our team!
Scott Atlas - Social Worker (REACH)
We are thrilled to introduce Scott Atlas, who joins us this year as a Social Worker at CLA. Though this is Scott’s first year in our district, he brings a wealth of experience from his previous work in another district. Scott’s passion for making a difference and building strong relationships is what led him to become a School Social Worker. He is deeply committed to empowering students, helping them grow, and creating positive, supportive environments.
In addition to working directly with students, Scott enjoys helping schools develop training programs and sharing his expertise with staff on how to manage behavioral issues. He also excels at connecting schools with mental health resources and support networks.
Outside of his role at CLA, Scott enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, working on his yard, going to concerts, and watching football—though he admits being a Bears fan has its challenges! Scott is excited for a great school year, and he looks forward to getting to know the CLA community and watching each student thrive.
Welcome to the team, Scott!
Amy Whitcomb - School Psychologist
Amy Whitcomb is our dedicated School Psychologist for both the ABLE and REACH programs. Now in her second year at CLA and District 15, Amy brings her expertise and passion to supporting our students’ growth and development. She values the connections she makes with students, staff, and families, and takes great pride in seeing the progress her students make throughout the year.
Outside of her work at CLA, Amy enjoys spending her free time reading, taking walks, shopping, and being with friends and family. We are grateful for the positive energy and care Amy brings to our community, and we look forward to another great year with her!
