VMMS Community Connection
Week of April 14, 2025 - April 18, 2025
Greetings, Viper Community!
This week we would like to highlight how our Vipers are encouraged to be Risk-Takers through the IB Learner Profile and hone their Communication through our IB Approaches to learning.
In all our IB courses, Criteria C is where students are assessed in their Communication often through writing but more so through presentations and explaining their learning. Students are tasked with different project outcomes like creating a video, presenting with their group in front of the class, or acting out a skit, etc. These various learning opportunities are designed for students to hone in on their confidence/sense of self, understanding of the audience, and master public speaking skills.
Two very special VMMS events that happened this past week, exemplify Vipers who truly embody being IB Risk-Takers and have stellar skills in communication!
During the VUSD Arts Under the Stars showcase, the VMMS Sangam Dance Club was featured performing Sangam dance that is rooted in the beauty and cultural tradition of India. Enjoy the featured video! Their stunning costumes were funded by a grant through VEF (Vista Education Fund). Thank you to Mrs. Degtyarev, a Science/Design teacher, who shares her passion with our students and values our IB identity of celebrating diversity and culture in the VMMS school community.
In addition, we had two 8th grade AVID students (Gabriela M. & Cameron L.) who represented VMMS in the Optimist Oratorical contest, which is an international contest that gives youngsters the platform to speak to the world! This year's topic is "How Optimism Has Guided Me Through Trying Times." Our Vipers placed 1st and 2nd in the District contest held last month and moved on to the Zone contest that took place this Saturday. One of our Vipers placed 2nd and now will be moving on to the San Diego County contest taking place in May. Thank you to Mrs. Eckle, who supports our AVID students and ensures that VMMS has opportunities to be recognized.
We are proud of all our Vipers as they develop their IB Learner Profile and Approaches to Learning through different opportunities in and outside the classroom. We encourage all Vipers to seize moment! Check in with your Viper about upcoming/past classroom projects/presentations in which they were Risk-Takers and Communicated their learning!
Please call the office at (760) 726-5766 or visit the office M-F from 8:00-4:00 if you have any questions or need assistance.
Thank you!

VMMS implements the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) framework to crate a safe and positive learning environment for all students. Our school-wide behavior expectations are to follow The Viper Way: Be Epic!
Throughout the year, we have had EPIC Viper challenges where we tracked behavior expectations like wearing lanyards & IDs as well as tracking tardies. In the upcoming weeks we will be looking for the three behavior criteria featured in the slide from our Advisory last week.
Please engage in conversations with your Viper regarding their participation in the upcoming EPIC Viper recognition event.

The end of year state testing is fast approaching! Our Vipers have been preparing for this important measurement of their growth and learning through the iReady diagnostic testing/lessons and completing Interim Assessment Blocks (IABs) for math, ELA, and science.
