District Webpage Translation Tool
Having a website that is accessible to all our students, staff, and families is very important to us, and because of our diverse population, a translation tool has always been a feature on our website.
The Translation Tool for the website will now be in the top right corner of the webpage (see image). You will click this button and then select your desired language from a drop-down menu.
Closed Captioning and Live Transcription in Zoom
Because Zoom has become so essential, we'd like to highlight accessibility features that can help you be more inclusive in your meetings and webinars. Zoom now provides closed captioning and live transcription for those with a pro, business, Education, Enterprise accounts. (ICCSD staff using their work accounts will have access to this feature). This tool is helpful for everyone, not just for those who are hearing impaired.
Click here to see full instructions about how to set up this feature for your meetings. You can also watch the video below for more information.

Restorative Justice
Restorative Justice Coordinator Brad Kelly and members of the Equity Department attended a very special pizza party at North Central Junior High.
Ms. Latrenda Soukup was kind enough to invite members of the Equity department to come to a Celebration of Excellence with her Success Center class! Together we threw a pizza party for students that were doing well academically, and had worked hard to improve their grades!
There were a lot of A's, B's, laughs, and pepperoni to go around!
We'd like to thank this special class for allowing us to build community with you. We had a blast!

Community Cares
Members of the Equity department were excited to be able to attend an award ceremony at Tate High School. The award ceremony at Tate is an illustration of the student's hard work and perseverance to be great while doing hard things!
This celebration was to acknowledge students who were doing well at Tate. The awards included improvement in grades, attendance, teachers' acknowledgment of students making great progress and improvements with their grades, effort, and showing up each day!
"Students at Tate are often forgotten about or just overlooked completely. So when we show up there, it shows them there are others in our district who sees them and are just as proud of them as their school staff." - Fred Newell, Inclusion and Outreach Coordinator
"The awards ceremony shines a bright light on all of the achievements taking place at Tate!!" - Priscilla Culp, Diversity and Equity Coach

Message from Principal Ann Browning
Hello ICCSD Friends,
Homebrewed - Iowa City's favorite local band is hosting an album release party to benefit the Tate High School Pantry! Their band supports many local charities as Music with a Mission.
Please consider helping Tate in a few ways:
- 1. Attend this benefit/gathering at Wildwood - Sunday December 4th from 4:00 - 7:00 pm. $10 cost at the door.
- 2. If you are unable to attend - please consider donating $10 via the ICCSD Foundation Donation Link for Tate High School Pantry
- 3. Attend and reserve a table for you and your friends. Link above.
We were so honored Homebrewed chose Tate High School. As Homebrewed states on their website: "We use our music to give back for all the blessings we have had in life."
We'd be even more honored if you joined us for this event and had a good time enjoying music, conversation and time together.
Holiday Season is upon us!
As winter approaches and many holidays creep closer, we would like to issue a few gentle reminders in order to ensure ICCSD celebrates the season in a Culturally Proficient and appropriate way.
Reminders:
- Not all cultures celebrate Christmas. Many of our families celebrate during this time of year, whether they observe Christmas, Hanukkah, or are just happy to get some time off school. We at ICCSD want to support each and every one of our families.
- Do not equate all of your students of color with being low SES. While hearts may be in the right place, making blanket generalizations like this about a racial group is harmful to our students. Get to know your students and their individual background instead!
- Engaging in Christmas activities may land culturally destructive for some of your students. Be mindful of the needs of your diverse student population when planning events, activities, or lessons around holidays.
- Our district uses the term "Holiday or Winter Break" on purpose. This is to be inclusive of our many non-Christian families. There are lots of holidays going on in the winter season, which is one of the great things about living in such a diverse community!
What's going on in December?
What is Human Rights Day?
Human Rights Day was created to celebrate the day in 1948 that the United Nations General Assembly came together to adopt the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This historic resolution sets a precedent for fundamental rights and freedoms to which we are all entitled to. It guarantees the rights of every individual everywhere, without distinction based on nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, religion, language, or any other status.
The United Nations and all nations involved have committed themselves to finding solutions to fundamental discrimination against our most vulnerable people in society, including women and girls, indigenous peoples, people of African descent, LGBTQ+ people, migrants, and people with disabilities, among others.
The United Nations has created the 2030 Agenda. This is a plan that maps out solutions and changes that by 2030 will significantly increase the quality of life for our vulnerable populations, reduce discrimination, end poverty and hunger, and ensure that all human beings can fulfill their potential. This Agenda has 17 categories with additional action steps to address these issues. To learn more about the 2030 Agenda, click here. [Arabic] [Chinese] [English] [French] [Russian] [Spanish]

International Day for the Abolition of Slavery
This day is not a celebration marking the end of slavery but, in the words of
Secretary-General of the UN, António Guterres, it is "a day of remembrance, recognition, and an urgent call to action". As we know, the effects of slavery can be felt around the world today. In fact, according to the International Labour Organization, over 40 million people worldwide are victims of modern slavery. This is used as an umbrella term to cover practices such as forced labor, debt bondage, forced marriage, and human trafficking.

Our team would like to acknowledge the hard work our teachers, students, families, and community have done this year. You all certainly deserve some time off, so we'd like to wish you a very happy winter break!
See you in 2023!
