SPOTLIGHT
on New Milford Schools

Message from Superintendent, Dr. Janet Parlato
Dear New Milford Public Schools Families, Faculty, and Staff,
The arrival of the spring season brings us more daylight as well as many school activities for families to attend. We sincerely hope that you enjoy visiting our schools during these days and watching our students in action, learning about our programming, or celebrating the end of a productive year.
As you know, it is also budget voting season. The referendum/vote on the Board of Education and town budgets will occur on Tuesday, May 20 at your usual polling places. Your vote is an important way to provide input to the community.
I hope that you will take a careful look at all of our wonderful district activities and events throughout these pages to see the range of opportunities we offer and how our students and staff succeed through their efforts and dedication. Here's to a productive and enjoyable month of May for all of us!
Thank you for your ongoing support of our students and our schools.
Janet P. Parlato, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
π THANK YOU New Milford Teachers! π
π The 14 Most Powerful Compliments to Give a Teacher π
Teaching-talk about an underappreciated profession! Without teachers, we wouldn't have doctors, lawyers, CEOs, engineers, authors . . . the list goes on. Teachers go through additional schooling, work nights and weekends, and somehow have a knack for holding on to their sanity while dealing with other people's kids.
Congratulations Teacher of the Year Nominees!

Professional Learning
Dr. Chris Abildgaard from the Social Learning Network spent time Monday afternoon with our paraprofessionals. The topic was "Neurodiversity in our Schools." Dr. Chris shared not only a better understanding of what neurodiversity is but tools in which we can help our students. In the evening Dr. Chris met with our parents at the Maxx for an evening of continued conversation. Thank you, Dr. Chris, and thank you to our dedicated paraprofessionals and supportive families!
Food & Nutrition News
Spring is here and our department embraced the month by participating in the SMS Health Fair and adding two new entrees to our menus.
The focus of the health fair was on dairy, calcium needs and the importance of it for strong bone growth. Adequate Calcium intake and Vitamin D is essential throughout the life cycle, especially during growth periods. Dairy is offered at every breakfast and lunch. The National School Lunch Program provides school children with one-third or more of their recommended dietary allowances for key nutrients, such as protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C.
A new Charcuterie Lunch Box was offered at every school for a week in April. It was a big hit and included a yummy chocolate hummus, string cheese, sliced apples and whole grain crackers. It was very popular and the students are still asking for it.
The Woodle dish that was sampled in January at NMHS was perfected and served this month. It was well received by the students and will be back on the menu in May.

He encouraged our students to continue to pursue truth and knowledge about the world around them by analyzing scientific data without bias or emotion and so stay curious.

6 Red Students Present Research Projects About Connecticut
6 Red Language Art and Writing teachers supported opportunities for students to lead and direct a parent morning focused on showcasing non fiction text writing. Students were challenged to research topics about Connecticut and develop theme ideas as they organized their learning. After generating additional research questions and learning how to cite sources, students were tasked with writing a chapter book on their topic. Some popular choices were : The Danbury Fair Mall, Sandy Hook, The Schaghticoke Indian tribe, The Danbury Trashers and Kent Falls. Beyond their writing, students also designed a day for parents to visit, listen to authors and celebrate student success. Students had options to read their texts on their own or select a classmate to share their written words for them. A few students worked in pairs and in following their curiosities, created multimedia presentations in addition to their non fiction writing. Parents were welcomed by student ambassadors to the project, who also shared expectations for audience behavior, an agenda for the read-alouds and introductions to writers. Lastly, the students encouraged parents to play student made vocabulary games in the rear of the media to round out their experience. The 6 Red reading celebration was a great success for our non fiction authors.
Fabian Ramirez
Throughout the school year, SMS has brought in a variety of guest speakers for grade-level assemblies addressing a wide range of topics. On April 11th, SMS welcomed nationally renowned anti-bullying speaker, Fabian Ramirez. Fabian presented his program, Pain to Power, De-escalate Conflict, Build Resilience, and Stay True to Yourself to each grade in grade-level assemblies.
Fabianβs powerful messages of βhurt people, hurt people,β and βlove has the power to transform an enemy into a friend,β were well received by students and the entire SMS staff. Fabian was able to relate to his student audience through humor and sharing events from his own personal journey in middle school where he was the victim of bullying.
Dream Boards
SMS students had the opportunity to create dream boards prior to April break. As a follow up to our guest speaker, Ed Gerety from February, SMS Student Leaders for a Change planned and facilitated the school-wide activity on Friday, April 11th prior to April break. Students were able to create their boards on poster or digitally through Canva or Google Slides.
A dream board is a powerful visual representation of your goals and dreams. Itβs a poster you create that contains both pictures and words that describe your goals and dreams. It represents who you are, where you want to go, and what you are committed to achieving. Itβs not just a collage of pretty picturesβitβs a powerful tool that has been used by thousands of individuals to help make their dreams come true. Dream boards are also referred to as vision boards, goal maps, roadmaps, and treasure maps.
The creative juices were flowing as students created their dream boards during full-team meetings in the cafeteria and Library Media Center. Students were encouraged to hang these boards somewhere that is meaningful to them to serve as a constant reminder of their hopes and dreams!
Project Based Learning in 8th Grade World Language
Students explore the world around them through projects! In French, students learned about the French-speaking countries in West Africa. Students worked collaboratively to show their learning by creating maps, no longer a long lost skill! They are continuing their explorations of French West Africa through the use of stories that integrate their map learning with the French language itself. Students in Spanish 1 had the opportunity to plan the trip of a lifetime to three different cities in the Spanish speaking world. Students worked collaboratively to use authentic resources to investigate the weather forecast and select activities to do in each city. Then students created a visual itinerary of their dream trip. Students enjoyed applying their language skills in exploring the authentic world.

Celebrating the Inaugural Grade 4 Math Mavericks!
Congratulations to the 35 amazing fourth-grade students who successfully completed the

Also on April 2, our First Graders went to see a performance of The Very Hungry Caterpillar at the Warner Theater in Torrington. The first grade teachers reported how proud they were of their classes for putting into practice the NES CARES expectations while on the field trip!
Our plastic collection continues! Thanks LHTC for helping us recycle plastic for our soon to be upcycled bench.
"Spring Morning" by A.A. Milne
Where am I going? I don't quite know. Down to the stream where the king-cups grow- Up on a hill where the pine-trees blow- Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know.
Where am I going? The clouds sail by, Little ones, baby ones, over the sky. Where am I going? The shadows pass, Little ones, baby ones, over the grass.
If you were a cloud, and sailed up there, You'd sail on the water as blue as air. And you'd see me here in the fields and say: "Doesn't the sky look green today?"
Where am I going? The high rooks call: "It's awful fun to be born at all. Where am I going? The ring-doves coo: "We do have beautiful things to do."
If you were a bird, and lived on high, You'd lean on the wind when the wind came by, You'd say to the wind when it took you away: "That's where I wanted to go today!"
Where am I going? I don't quite know. What does it matter where people go? Down to the wood where the blue-bells grow- Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know.
