Principals Message:
Kia ora whaanau,
Last Friday we said goodbye to Mrs Justine Millen (Wootton) who is heading off on maternity leave for a year. We wish her all the best for her time with her baby. We welcome back Mrs Keryn Walker (Chitty) who will be covering the classes for the year. It is great to have her back on the team. Whaea Anna Ronaki will be acting Head of Department. Also in the staffing front, Mrs Tessa Ritchie will be stepping into acting Deputy Principal of Curriculum for the rest of this year. She brings with her a passion for the local curriculum and will add to our Senior Leadership Team.
As part of our focus on PB4L we are running a positive behaviour day on the last day of term. The students have already earned a non uniform day for their improved efforts around tagging and looking after our school environment. The students have been given ‘coffee cards’ to claim points. Once a card is full it is returned to the Whaanau teacher, the school is aiming to get 2000 points ( That is 400 full ‘coffee cards’) to earn a sausage sizzle, and if they get more than 2000 points an extra surprise will be added. To earn points students need to show our school wide behaviour expectations. No money will be required for the last day of school.
As we hit the flu season and students are tired, please remember that if your child is sick they should stay home. At school we are maintaining healthy hygiene practices to try to reduce the spread of sickness.
Our Year 10 students have been given the opportunity to participate in the Spirit of Adventure this year. Mr Cameron is leading this group. If your child is interested in putting their name forward please get in contact with him. It is an awesome opportunity to develop team and leadership skills outside the classroom. Past students that have participated really enjoyed the experience and saw personal growth in resilience and confidence.
Thank you to the whaanau that filled in the survey on knowing where your child is at. In Years 9-13 we have opened up the comments section of assessments to the Kamar portal. Now when you log into the portal you should be able to see the marks your child has received and any feedback from those assessments. With assessments that are project based the teachers will be writing comments about where your child is at so you can assist with making sure they stay on track.
Lastly in response to feedback we have adapted the school calendar by adding in a community one that has important events for parents to know. You will see that this is now the link to the calendar in the newsletter. Events for students can still be accessed through the app, as are the assessment calendars for NCEA. We are hoping the new community calendar will be easier to view so that parents know what is happening each week.
Have a great weekend and good luck to all the teams playing, represent OAS by "Being the best we can - No limits!"

If you're unable to make the meeting, but think you can help out in some small way, then please email onewheroagday@gmail.com
Ag Day Animal Entries
Ag Day is closer than you think! Calves born from 24 June 2021, and lambs and goats born from 1 July 2021 are eligible for entry in this year’s Ag Day, as are dogs, and chickens that are ordered through school (see below). Animal entries will open at the end of Term 2… watch this space!
Chicken Orders
Chicken orders have now CLOSED. If you have ordered baby chickens, remember to collect them next Friday 2 July from school at 3.00pm. You will need to bring a closed box (with air holes), no smaller than a shoe box, to the office before the day of collection. Our Ag Day volunteers box the chickens up during school hours on the day of collection so they are ready to go home with you at 3.00pm.
Please note that students cannot take the chickens home on the school buses.
Those students who are considering showing their chickens at Ag Day will be given a diary to complete while they are rearing their chickens. Just ask for a diary when you collect your chickens. One diary per student.
Spud in the Bucket Competition … Enter Now!
Year 1-8 students have the opportunity to enter the Spud in the Bucket competition again this year, with awards for the Heaviest Potato and Greatest Collective Weight of Spuds up for grabs. Each bucket of potatoes is ‘weighed in’ the day before Ag Day.

The purpose of the New Zealand Army Reserve Force, (ResF), formerly known as the Territorial Force, is to support the Regular Force on operations. We are actively seeking more ResF soldiers for the Artillery, Engineer, Infantry and Logistics regiments, as well as the Medical corps. Training programmes for each unit vary but ResF soldiers typically train one night a week and several weekends per year. A ResF soldier completes a minimum of 20 days’ training per year although many soldiers enjoy the challenge the Service offers and choose to train more. Much of the training occurs outside of university semester time, and ResF soldiers can conceivably earn $15,000 in their first year through their part time employment.

Onewhero Daycare
Hi, for a number of months we have been working towards re-opening the Onewhero daycare. We’ve renovated the building including putting in a Commercial Kitchen so we can provide meals. We’ve been through a Resource Consent process with Council so that we can offer places to under two year-olds which weren’t previously available. We’re also extending the operating hours to full-day care to cater to working parents. We’re working really hard to make this a high quality centre.
We’re now starting to hire staff to help us on that journey. You can find the job advert to apply online either by searching on keyword ‘Dandelions’ at www.seek.co.nz or you can find the job advert link on our Facebook page DandelionsAndDragonfliesOnewhero and follow us there for future updates.
