Breaking the Cycle of Food Cravings
What is a food craving?
Definition: A food craving is an intense desire to consume a specific food, stronger than normal hunger. There is no single explanation for food cravings and they can range from the following:
1. Foods that are high in fats, carbohydrates and glucose (chocolate, sweets) affect the brain centers for appetite to produce endorphins and interactions with the opioid system in the brain triggering an addictive effect. The consumer of the glucose feels the urge to consume more glucose, much like an alcoholic, because the brain has become conditioned to release "happy hormones" every time glucose is present. This essentially means that the brain physically changes when it becomes used to consuming a mass quantity of a certain chemical so that the brain can release the highest quantity of "happy hormones" as possible. Emotional Eaters are not emotional eaters...it is your brain telling you it wants HAPPY HORMONES.
2. When we consume foods that are not clean (foods that provide nutrients and fuel for the body, the body remains “unsatisfied" creating a craving for the "fuel" that is STILL needed even after eating sometimes a large amount of “food.”
What these statements say is that craving for a food is a TRUE PHYSICAL RESPONSE FROM YOUR BODY and it is affecting how you eat. It’s not just in your head! You’re not imagining it.
If you often find yourself with deep food cravings, or being ruled by those cravings, do give yourself some grace and time to adjust to this program and what it can help you do.

Additional Tip - The Benefits of Alkaline Broth

Following is a great recipe:
Yield: 2.5 quarts.
Ingredients
4 quarts spring water (Add vegetables you like!)
Example Recipe
3 medium sweet potatoes, diced
4 carrots, cubed
2 medium onions, chopped
1 small beet, diced
3 stalks celery, chopped
1 bunch parsley, finely chopped
1 bunch kale or other green leafy vegetable
2 cloves garlic, minced or pressed
2 teaspoons dried, flaked dulse (seaweed)
1 sheet nori or kombu
Pinch of sage
For a little spice add a hot pepper
Instructions:
Wash and scrub all vegetables. Do not peel if organic. Bring water to a boil. Add vegetables; bring back to a boil, then turn heat down to simmer. Cover the pot. Simmer the veggies for several hours. Remove ⅔ cup of vegetables, blend in blender, and mix with some broth to make a puree to eat with meals or mix to thicken other soups/full of fiber. Strain the broth ~ it is alkaline and rich in minerals, especially potassium, which can be flushed out of the body when taking extra liquids. Sip broth between meals. Enjoy!
