Grand Slam Winner - Mrs. Witkowski's Class
The 20 Minute Challenge!
Are you ready for a Challenge Roosevelt students and families?
Mrs. B. Garbutt and Ms. Gordon, two members of Roosevelt’s Achievement Team, would like to challenge you to dedicate just 20 minutes of your day to reading at home. This could be reading on your own, listening to someone else read, or taking turns reading with a family member or friend.
Why read for 20 minutes?
There are many academic and social benefits to reading daily.
This week we share benefit # 1.
Builds Vocabulary: Reading 20 minutes a day/5 days a week can expose readers to 1.8 million words per year. Compare this to students who are reading 5 minutes per day, they will be exposed to 282,000 words per year. Wow! That’s a bid difference!
So, what do you say… is this challenge accepted?
Let’s get all of our Roosevelt Tiger students and families reading 20 minutes per day and stay tuned for benefit #2 in a future Parent Roundup.

School - Parent Compact
It’s that time of year again! Please take a moment to sign our Roosevelt School-Parent Compact.
What is the School-Parent Compact?
The Roosevelt School-Parent Compact is a shared agreement that describes how parents, students, and school staff will work together towards a common goal of student achievement in alignment with the State’s high academic standards. This compact demonstrates the importance of a partnership and outlines key roles that each member is responsible for in order to support student learning throughout the school year.
How to review and sign?
Parents/guardians you have 2 options to sign the compact. There is a digital compact and signature form (visit the link below) or you can sign a physical paper copy at Parent Teacher Conferences. Note: If you have more than one child at Roosevelt you will have to fill out a digital form or sign a paper copy for EACH student.
Teachers review and sign the compact prior to conferences.
Students review and sign the compact, at school, with their teacher and classmates.
Linked is the digital Compact and Signature Option for parents/guardians>

From Mrs. Serazio
Tiger Tuesdays are off to a great start at Roosevelt! All students are encouraged to show their Tiger pride on Tuesdays by wearing Roosevelt gear or our school colors of blue and orange!
Our PBIS expectation focus for next week will be in the cafeteria. We are working on keeping our cafeteria clean and holding students responsible for cleaning up their messes after eating. Please talk with your child about how they eat and clean up in the cafeteria. We are also looking for volunteers to assist in the cafeteria any day from 11:40-12:30. If you can help, please let Mrs. Serazio know at jserazio2@livoniapublicschools.org. Thank you in advance!
PBIS
Thank you to all the families who returned the PBIS commitment sheet included with our pamphlet. Our staff and students are dedicated to being respectful, responsible, and safe as stated in our Positive Behavior Matrix. Students can earn “red tickets” for following the matrix expectations. Every Friday, teachers pull two red tickets, and the students can come to the lobby for a special prize!
Medications and Health Information - Please read!
If your child has a medical condition and/or requires medication at school, please download the forms your child needs for school, based on their health conditions (Life-Threatening Food and/or Insect Allergy, Allergy IHCP, Asthma, Diabetes, Seizure Disorder). New forms must be completed by you and your child’s physician each year (dated after the last day of school of the previous school year). Please ensure that the forms include both your signature and your child’s doctor’s signature. We cannot dispense any medication without these completed forms. Forms can be found on our school website under the parent tab as “Health Forms”.
Medications and forms can be brought to the school office anytime moving forward. Don't delay in sharing medical updates as you get updated information.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Serazio at jserazio2@livoniapublicschools.org.
October Lunch Menu
Art with Ms. Salvia
Also, take a look at our completed Alphabet Soup projects!
2nd through 4th graders learned how to draw an autumn-themed tree. We talked about the Warm Colors on the Color Wheel: Red, Orange, and Yellow. We used warm colors to fill the leaves on the trees to make it look festive for autumn, and cool colors for the background to compliment our warm colors. 2nd grade used markers and texture boards, while 3rd and 4th grade used Sharpies and paint.
See you next week in art!
Ms. Salvia
PLTW with Mr. Morrow
Our students have been continuing their exploration into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). This week has been geared toward building knowledge of our content through meaningful experiences.
- Kindergarteners learned about the natural environment. We discussed the difference between a natural environment and a built environment.
- First graders explored light by reviewing our light centers from last week. We also learned that the color we see comes from light bouncing off of an object and into our eyes.
- Second graders concluded our heat investigation and learned that foam is the better insulating material when it comes to reducing the amount of heat transferred from a hand warmer.
- Third graders are hard at work with their VEX IQ kits, building simple machines to understand mechanics and engineering principles.
- Fourth graders Continued their work building their fictitious plant. They have been building and justifying each structure by explaining it's function. They will be working on their "Explain" step of the design process when they are done building.
As we continue to learn through inquiry, we look forward to working through the design process to put our learning into action!
See you next week!
Mr. Morrow
LMC with Mr. Pinta
With another shortened week, students who missed LMC last week due to Teacher Professional Development followed the same agenda as their fellow classmates did that week. So students in second through fourth grade tried Typetastic, a new web-based typing program after listening to a story. First graders listened to "Creepy Crayon" by Aaron Reynolds and worked on a click and drag activity using a mouse on their Chromebook. Kindergarteners got to explore on Chromebooks in Santa Tracker. Students who had library last week picked up where they left off last week and did some review of the rules with a fun game.
Mr. Pinta
Music with Ms. Grammatico
We've had SO much fun in music class this week. 3rd and 4th graders learned a new game called "Pass The Witch's Broomstick." If the broomstick landed on you then you rode on it around the circle. We were laughing up a storm and students have been begging to play it again throughout the week! They also played tubano drums, rhythm sticks, boomwhackers, and egg shakers to a classic favorite "Pumpkin Bones." Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade also played rhythm sticks to "Pumpkin Bones" and learned a new song "Skin and Bones." Ask them to sing the spooky "Ooooo" part for you! They learned the song "Pumpkin Round and Fat" and played a game while singing it. When they got a new partner, they had to make a Jack-O-Lantern face. So many fun, cute, and even scary Jack-O-Lantern faces! See everyone next week!
