Happy Holidays Little Raider Families!
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break!
Be A Raider Character Focus
Be Honest.
Our focus for October was Be A Raider, Be Honest. We discussed that Raiders are truthful in what we say and do. We own our mistakes and apologize. We also use I-messages to be honest and solve problems peacefully.
Be Helpful.
Our focus for November was Be A Raider, Be Helpful. Raiders are helpful, not hurtful. Being helpful shows how we can use our words and actions to make others' lives better. We also discussed that when we are grateful for all that we have, we are helpful to others that are in need.
Students discussed and reviewed these character traits in Family Meetings. We also discussed this information on the morning announcements. If ever you would like to extend conversations about our character focus please tune in to our morning announcements to hear what we are discussing:

In October, we hosted a school store for the students who demonstrated Responsibility. In November, we had our third school store for Honesty. We are fortunate to have our Sunnyvale High School PALS (mentors) help at the storefront. The students brought their payment (Be A Raider punch card) to the store and chose an item from the menu at the window. The students then “drove” to the next window to pick up their orders from our PALS. Here are the dates when the school store will be open again:
December 6th: Be Helpful
February 7th: Be Positive
March 7th: Be Kind
Red Ribbon Week
In the library, Mrs. Dodson and I discussed the importance of reporting big problems. Big problems are when situations seem scary, unsafe and dangerous. They can also make us feel angry, scared and hurt. These problems must be reported to an adult as soon as possible. Little problems are situations that we can solve by ourselves. If the little problem continues after students try to fix it, he or she must report it to an adult. A wonderful resource for this topic is the book Don’t Squeal Unless It’s A Big Deal by Jeanie Franz:
Don't Squeal Unless it's a big Deal
Here are some additional tools/information for you to use at home to extend our Be A Raider character focus:
FUTURE FRIDAYS
Every Friday on the morning announcements and in family meetings we discuss future careers. Fortunately, we have had several community members volunteer to participate on the morning announcements. The last couple of months we had Mr. Adams and Mr. Davis from the Sunnyvale Fire Department. We also had Daniel Hernandez( former player for FC Dallas), Mayor Bickerstaff of Sachse and Petty Officer Hall of the United States Navy. If you are willing to volunteer for this awesome activity please contact me directly.
MUCH THANKS!
Thank you for entrusting your children with me daily. I feel so fortunate to be Sunnyvale Elementary’s School Counselor. We are now in the holiday season full throttle in Sunnyvale I.S.D. Returning after the holidays can be difficult. The students get comfortable with being at home. It is expected for them to have some difficulties adjusting to the school routine again. I have found a wonderful article that gives some tips help prevent this from happening:
6 Tips for Sending Kids Back to School After Breaks.
If you are noticing your child having an exceptionally difficult time with returning to school, please do not hesitate to reach out to me so that we can come up with a plan to help your child.

Hello Raider Families, and Happy December!
Your SIS Raider has been busy in the last several weeks. In October we celebrated Red Ribbon Week, and learned the importance of standing up to peer pressure. During this special week, The Nerd Rapper (Anthony Cotton) performed at SIS and shared the message of making positive choices for yourself. The kids danced, cheered, and joined in on the rapping!
In November we learned the importance of self talk, and how negative thoughts about ourselves can impact us. Each student created an affirmation mirror to use. As students created their mirrors, they began sharing kind words and affirmations with one another ("I think you are strong" or "Brave is a word you should include on your mirror"). It was a joy to witness students building one another up.
During this season of gratitude, I want to express my gratitude for the students and families in Sunnyvale ISD. May your Holiday breaks bring you comfort, rest, and connection with loved ones.

Happy Fall Raider Families!
In October, we recognized the Red Ribbon campaign by inspiring our kids to be drug free! This week was dedicated to promoting drug awareness and encouraging healthy, drug-free lifestyles among our students.
Guidance lessons focused on fentanyl and substance abuse prevention. Key topics included:
- Identifying Risks: Understanding how fentanyl is often disguised and the dangers of using drugs from unregulated sources.
- Healthy Coping Strategies: Learning about healthy ways to cope with stress and peer pressure.
- Peer Support: Encouraging open discussions among peers about substance use and supporting each other.
Here is the quick video we watched during our discussion... https://vimeo.com/747036321?utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8EwvzlCRilwSl2TM7sdyI_AtSLYAFN0H1MVH1rwBeFT78bD67wBam9xoo_lBZY9_owaO1vKGO3JejJ5rGT36-fccCOmoqUccSqYN1SofiwOk9V-5k&_hsmi=305857695&utm_content=305857695&utm_source=hs_email
Thank you for your commitment to keeping our school community safe and informed. Together, we can make a difference.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Medina

We have had such a busy, fun and productive October!! We hope you all are happy as we are to feel a little bit of breeze in the air. Fall is here and we are so excited about it!
Our Hope Squad has been meeting weekly and we are so excited to say our students have officially been trained in QPR from our Director of Counseling Services, Mrs. James. Later in November we will be taking a field trip to connect with other Hope Squad members and have no doubt we will come back with great ideas and energy!
We also celebrated all of the fun Homecoming festivities. The district wide pep rally and community parade are two of our favorite traditions and this year was no different. We are so proud of all of the nominees on the Homecoming Court!
With the help of our supportive PTA, we were able to celebrate Red Ribbon Week with spirit days, daily announcements and reminders of the importance of making good choices for our current and future selves.
We also continued our monthly recognitions of Student of the Month, our Rockin Raider staff award, and worked together with the admin team to choose the first SHS recipient of our RISE award.
We hope this next month brings you and your family some rest and times of gathering, thankfulness and rest. As always, please reach out if you have any needs or concerns. We are a partnership and we look forward to helping you and your SHS Raiders!
