FAC Weekly Update
November 18, 2022
Good Morning, FAC Family
We hope that you had a wonderful week! As we approach the Thanksgiving Break, our students are continuing to work hard and push themselves to new levels of artistic achievement. We've enjoyed fantastic performances from the FAC Theatre and Theatre D & P students in their production of Queen Pericles, and have seen our 1:30 p.m. Jazz Studio students gain confidence in their improvisational skills at last Wednesday evening's concert. Thanksgiving Break kicks off in style, as our FAC Percussionists take the stage in Sutherlin Recital Hall next Tuesday evening. Remember, if you can't make it out to one of our performances in the Recital Hall, join us via Livestream on our YouTube page!
Here’s the latest from the halls of the FAC…
This Week's Student Leadership Lesson
DON'T CUT CORNERS
A common obstacle to success is the desire to cut corners and take the short road to success. But shortcuts never pay off in the long run. Most people tend to underestimate the time it takes to achieve something of value, but to be successful you have to be willing to pay your dues. Cutting corners is a sign of impatience and poor self-discipline. If you continue to give in to your moods or impulses, then you need to change your approach to doing things. The best method is to set standards for yourself that require accountability. Suffering a consequence for not following through helps you to stay on track. Once you have your new standards in place, work according to them...not your moods.
Self-discipline is a quality that is won through practice. Psychologist Joseph Mancusi noted, "Truly successful people have learned to do what does not come naturally. Real success lies in experiencing fear or aversion and acting in spite of it."
Dr. John C. Maxwell, The Maxwell Daily Reader; page 352 (November 18)
Congratulations to Karis King!
Congratulations to Dr. Catherine Smith!
"Dr. Smith is the definition of energy and positivity. She cares so much about our success and about us personally. Through all four years that I have been in the architecture program, she has always taken time to thoroughly discuss projects and be specifically vague so we could learn the most out of the process. She’s an outstanding teacher and I'm so lucky to learn form her."
"Dr. Smith stands out from all other teachers because:
- Dr. Smith checks in with us every day to see how our day is going.
- She always tries to make our day better.
- She's a great listener and you can tell that she genuinely cares about what you are saying.
- She really cares about our futures, and aides in our college application process in any way she can.
- The work that she assigns is meaningful, and develops skills that we will need as architects.
- She is never too busy to make time to help you with a problem, whether it involves school or not.
- She is honest in a way that will help us to improve our craft.
- She is supportive of any ideas we come up with for a project, and always tells us to "try it!"
- She always makes an effort to attend our extracurricular events.
- She wants to know all of us as individuals, and really makes an effort to get to know us well.
- Dr. Smith always greets you with a smile."

Parent Guild: What Have We Done This Year? What Will We Do?
We fund ourselves through membership (a voluntary donation - recommended $25), and through direct asks to parents (2-3 donation drives for Holiday and end-of-year teacher/staff appreciation) to fund gifts and food for the staff.
So far this year, we have collected $2500 in membership, and used those funds to:
- have a teacher breakfast, courtesy of Fried Green Tomatoes Restaurant
- donated an umbrella and stand to the FAC for the tables out front ($1,000)
- funded merchandise purchases
- gifted Mr. Popat a family gift card to Top Golf for Principal Appreciation Day
To date, you, as a Guild, have volunteered at multiple Merchandise Sales (thank you all who have already been able to do this!), and sold tickets and merchandise at evening performances in several disciplines. We have an upcoming Student Holiday Sale where we will need the help of many – we’ll ask you soon for volunteers in several shifts throughout the day.
Our next big event is in December we’ll have our first major Staff Appreciation funded by holiday gift donations - a Luncheon and we’ll divide money donated among the faculty and staff and send them off with our collective thanks and gift cards to a well-deserved winter break.
