Dragon Community Newsletter #9
Denn John Middle School 24-25: October 7
Together! Always!
Dragon Community,
What an incredible week! Our Hispanic Heritage Night- Latin Party Around the World had over 300 guests! With delicious food, performances, and acts, we are proud of our massive event! :-) I cannot wait until next year to level up. Thank you to those who attended.
Note, we are also monitoring the storm. The SDOC is reviewing everything with the emergency management team and will make any decisions later this week. Please be on lookout for information. After school activities are canceled on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
As we work together to support our students' growth, it’s essential to focus on three key areas: teaching values at home, encouraging self-advocacy, and staying informed about district policies.
Teaching Values at Home: The values we instill in our children form the foundation of their character. Encourage kindness, respect, honesty, and resilience in everyday situations. Engage in conversations about ethical dilemmas and model positive behavior, as children often learn by example.
Encouraging Self-Advocacy: Empower your children to voice their thoughts and feelings. Teach them to express their needs and concerns effectively, whether in the classroom or at home. Role-playing scenarios can help them build confidence in advocating for themselves. Remind them that their voices matter, and practicing self-advocacy is a vital life skill.
Knowing District Policies: Familiarize yourself with our district's policies and resources. Understanding these guidelines will enable you to support your child effectively, especially in navigating challenges. Being informed helps you advocate for your child's needs and fosters a collaborative relationship with teachers and school staff.
Together, we can create an environment that nurtures responsible, confident, and informed young individuals. Thank you for your commitment to our students’ success.

3. Dragon's Den
Parents, we are excited to launch our club meetings at DJMS. So far, we have 4 official clubs and growing! Ms. Jessica Cole (media specialist) oversees our clubs and will be supervising adult during club meetings. Club meetings will occur during lunches and on specific days/periods. Any student interested in starting a new club may contact Ms. Cole. These procedures will be outlined during lunches starting on Monday, Oct. 7 so that students are informed.
4. PBIS Events (Pep Rally & Dance)
Parents, if the weather permits, we will host our first annual Dragon Pep Rally this Thursday, Oct. 10. Students that do not have any referrals or tardies are invited to attend. If a student has a referral or tardy, they will be able to see the drumline cadence before the event starts. Otherwise, students will need to work hard to participate in the spring semester pep rally. Invited students will receive their tickets on Thursday, Oct. 10 during 1st period.
Students that participated in the Pep Rally will also have the chance to participate in the dance on the following day. There will be a normal bell schedule, and the dances will be divided by grade level.
- 6th Grade Dance: 7th Period
- 7th Grade Dance: 6th Period
- 8th Grade Dance: 8th Period
5. Operation Hatching
Community, our goal is to continue the efforts of school improvement. We are striving to be a B-Rated school by next summer. The leadership team, administration, and staff believe in your students! Therefore, we only need 69 Level 2 students to make to a Level 3. Also, our Level 3s and up must stay as a Level 3. We are launching Operation Hatching in which targeted students will receive weekly interventions to help close this gap! Our dragon eggs are growing!
6. IQ Tickets
If students encounter technological issues, teachers will submit IQ tickets only during 1st period. This is to avoid duplicate and confusing tickets. Please review your student's laptop to determine if support is needed. If so, have your student ONLY request a ticket submission during 1st period. Note, students do not submit tickets (teachers do).
At Home Support
1. Parent Portal Sign Up
The best way to know live data of your student's performance is through the parent portal! Here you can see grades, attendance, discipline referrals, teacher notes, and testing information in live time. For your reference, below you will find the attachment to sign up. I highly recommend this for all parents!
2. Quarter 1 Ends
Parents, I cannot believe Quarter 1 is coming to an end. The last day for Qtr 1 is Friday, Oct. 11. Please ensure all of your student's assignment(s) and work is properly submitted. Teachers are working hard this week to finalize grades. Unfortunately, last minute submissions on missing assignments will not be considered. Therefore, plan accordingly. All parents may review missing student assignments in Focus under the Parent Portal.
3. Promote School Spirit
We want everyone to be proud Dragons! Parents, please encourage your student to buy school gear and promote Red/Black anytime you can. In fact, all students may "Red Out" this Thursday in connection to our school pep rally. Please ensure that any red attire is school appropriate. Research shows that there are higher trends of success when there is a strong sense of belonging at school.
