A Message from Marcie
Dear Families,
At South Park, we are continually working to build a community of kindness, respect, and connection. One simple yet powerful way we nurture this is through greetings. Whether it’s a warm “Good morning!” or a cheerful “Hello!” in the hallway, these small gestures contribute to a positive and welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
However, we’ve noticed that students don’t always return these greetings from adults or peers. While this might sometimes be unintentional, it’s an important skill to practice. Responding to a greeting is a simple act of kindness and respect that acknowledges others and strengthens our community.
Next week, as part of our Kindness Challenge, we will focus on this important habit. On Monday, the Kindness Week challenge of the day is for each student to try to greet at least 10 different people throughout the day. This challenge is designed to help students notice when someone greets them, take the initiative to greet others, and build confidence in connecting with those around them.
We would greatly appreciate your help in reinforcing this at home. Please take a moment to discuss with your child the importance of acknowledging others when greeted and practicing this simple act of kindness in your daily routines. Together, we can model and encourage these behaviors to help our students grow into thoughtful, respectful individuals.
Thank you for your continued support in fostering a culture of kindness and respect at South Park. We can’t wait to see how our students rise to this challenge next week!
Have a great weekend!
-Marcie
Reminder about Phones and Watches
We have noticed many more students coming to school with new personal devices since Winter Break. This information was shared back at Curriculum Night, but in case you missed it:
- Phones should not be seen or heard at school.
- Watches should not be used to initiate or respond to text messages during school hours.
- If either becomes a distraction, the school administration will take student devices and parents/guardians will be responsible for picking them up.
Parents, if your child texts you during the school day, we encourage you to resist the urge to respond immediately. Instead, this is an opportunity to guide your child toward seeking help from the adults around them.
I understand how hard this can be—I’m a parent, too. When my own daughter texts me during school hours, I typically send her a simple emoji to let her know I’m here, but I don’t engage in a conversation. If she needs support, I reply with, "Please find an adult to help you."
By practicing this approach, we can work together to help our children develop self-advocacy skills and build confidence in trusting others to assist them. Thank you for partnering with us in fostering their growth!
Read-a-thon Starts Monday!
We are excited to announce that our Read-a-thon fundraiser is starting Monday! Read-a-thon is a program that brings students together with family and classmates to encourage reading. Past Read-a-thons have funded our Storywalk and ClassVR system. This year our readers are raising funds to update our nonfiction book collection. Today, your student received a letter from their teacher explaining how to activate their personal Read-a-thon page. Readers can qualify for fun prizes just by reading, and the classes that read and raise the most will get the Penguin Pride trophies!
In addition, we’ll be holding some special events during the Read-a-thon to celebrate literacy. All next week, students will receive clues about our 7 “Masked Readers.” But the real excitement happens Wednesday, February 5th. That day, each class will have the chance to Zoom with an author to learn more about the process of creating books, followed by an all-school assembly where the Masked Readers are revealed! But there’s more! That evening, from 5:00-6:30, bring the whole family to the Winter Book-tacular for crafts, stories, reading to therapy dogs, hot cocoa, and pictures with Parker Penguin! We look forward to celebrating reading with each of your students!
Our Library Squad made a fabulous commercial with all the details, and parents, Mrs. Jahng recorded a special message just for you!
Traffic Safety Reminder
The Deerfield Police Department has asked us to remind all parents about traffic safety during the winter months to ensure the safety of our students. Please be especially vigilant during drop-off and pick-up times at South Park.
They ask that you pay close attention to the following:
- Speed: Follow posted speed limits and drive cautiously.
- U-turns: Avoid making U-turns on side streets.
- Driveways: Refrain from using or blocking neighboring driveways.
- Bus Safety: Always stop for bus arms when extended.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school community safe!
Parker's Picks
This week, Parker is sharing books to teach your little penguins about Lunar New Year, which is next Wednesday, January 29th. Many Asian cultures celebrate New Year at the first new moon of the year, which happens between mid-January and mid-February. Here are some fun books to celebrate the season.
Bringing in the New Year, by Grace Lin. Young readers will enjoy this simple tale of a Chinese American family preparing for the Lunar New Year. Grace Lin's boldly patterned illustrations will have kids wishing they could jump right into the celebration.
The Night Before Lunar New Year, by Natasha Wing and Lifeng Ho. It's the night before Lunar New Year, and a little girl is excited for all of the celebrations to come. She's prepared dumplings with her mom, bought a new dress in Chinatown, and even helped scare mythical beast Nian away with her cousins and brother. There's only one problem: she's a bit nervous about all of the loud noises at the upcoming Lunar New Year Parade. Will she overcome her fears?
Let’s Celebrate Korean New Year by Michelle W. Park. This sweet and festive picture book follows sisters Madeleine and Eloise as they prepare for their family’s Lunar New Year party. Madeleine shows her younger sister how to make Korean dumplings, how to put on her colorful outfit called a hanbok, and how to set the table. But when Madeleine forgets something, Eloise is there to help save the day!
Our Lunar New Year, by Yobe Qiu. Readers explore the festivities of China, Vietnam, Korea, Thailand, and India, discovering the unique clothing, food, decorations, and activities associated with each culture’s New Year’s celebration.
Grumpy New Year, by Katrina Moore. Sequel to Monarch nominee, Grandpa Grumps, Daisy goes to visit Yeh-Yeh for New Years in China! But at first her lack of sleep makes her too grumpy to enjoy all the fun he has planned.

Seeking a Thursday/Friday Lunch Supervisor for Early Learners
We are looking for a lunch supervisor on Thursday and Fridays from 11:30-12:30 for our Early Learners. If you are interested in the position, please reach out to Dr. Faust.
Note: Since this lunch period coincides with kindergarten and 2nd grade, we kindly request that potential candidates not have children in either of these grade levels. It can be challenging for young students to see their parent interacting with other students during the school day.
Missed a Tech Tip? We got you covered!
In October, we began sharing weekly tech tips in our newsletters to encourage digital safety. If you missed a tech tip or just want to review them, we have a Digital Hub for you to view them at your convenience. Make sure to keep your eyes open for more tech tips to come in the following weeks!

News From Early Learners
The students are continuing their exploration of community helpers, with a focus on doctors and veterinarians. Through dramatic play, they have been role-playing as veterinarians, giving animal check-ups, treating injuries, administering medicine, and ensuring their animal patients stay healthy and happy.
This week, our classes had the pleasure of welcoming two special guests: our school resource officer, Officer M, and Dr. Lynna, a parent of one of our Early Learners, who just so happens to be a dentist! This unit provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to explore research from an early age. They love using a mix of books, online resources, and real-life experts to answer their questions about community helpers. It’s also a great chance to focus on safety and self-care at home. Families can continue the learning at home by reviewing their family evacuation plan and practicing good oral hygiene—brushing and flossing—just like Dr. Lynna taught them!
Our Early Learners team is excited for 'When I Grow Up Day' next Friday! The children will have the opportunity to dress up as the professionals they dream of becoming. It’s always a joy to see our little ones imagining their future careers and the people they will become as adults. This event has also sparked some wonderful creative thinking in our PreK students, who have been exploring this theme through drawing and writing as part of their continued journey in exploring their written expression skills.
