Weekly Updates
Dear Hózhó Families,
Staff Appreciation Week is coming! If you would like to show your appreciation for our staff, please deliver a potluck lunch item to the lounge of the school that your child attends sometime before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 6th. We have staff lounges in the Lower School, Junior High and Upper School. If you have children at more than one school, just pick one lounge. Any contribution is appreciated. If your family is already contributing on one of the other days, please do not feel like you need to give more than once. Thank you for your ongoing support of our school. We LOVE working with your children!
Navajo Sovereignty Day - Monday, April 28th is an early start/early release day. Students are welcome to wear traditional attire.
Student Yearbooks - Families if you have any pictures that you'd like to share in the making of our yearbook, please email them to ghenry@hozhoacademy.org. We can't guarantee they will all make it in, but we will review them and determine which ones we can incorporate. For example, pictures taken at sports events, school dances, festivals etc.
Career Day - We are excited to announce our upcoming Pre-K through 8th Career Day on May 2nd and are looking for guest presenters! If you or someone you know would like to inspire our students by sharing insights about your profession, we would love to have you participate.
If you have questions, please contact our front office at (505) 722-8922.

2nd Grade Unit 4: Problem-Solving
Your child is practicing ways to solve interpersonal problems, like when two friends want to play with the same basketball or when someone makes a mess by accident. Second graders learn to describe a problem respectfully, without using blame words such as “You always . . .” or “You never . . .” They also come up with multiple solutions for a variety of problems, including those caused by accident. Toward the end of the unit, they practice identifying what different people might want or need and selecting the best solution for different problems.
Why is it important? Research shows that children who learn the skills in this unit are more likely to:
Make positive choices
Experience greater well-being
Contribute to a better school environment
Practice at Home
Notice and praise your child when they take steps to solve a problem. For example, when they discuss different solutions to a problem or say how they would feel and what they would want if they were in another person’s shoes. You can say, “It was great that you noticed Saya was alone and invited her to play too. I can tell you were thinking about how you would feel if you were her.”
Practice: If problems or disagreements arise— for example, between siblings or friends—remind your child to describe the problem respectfully. Ask, What’s the problem? How can you say it without blame?
Discuss: When reading books or watching a show, help your child practice thinking of several possible solutions to a problem and talk about which one could solve the problem. Which solution do you think would work better than the others? Why do you think that would work better?
