ED 100 - Introduction to Education
Growing Great Educators for the Future
Updates for this Fall ED 100
Hello all!
What amazing and challenging times we live in! I hope this information finds you well and safe.
I am very much looking forward to meeting with you on zoom through our CANVAS shell on September 29. I will publish the initial sections of the course at the end of the week previous to our start and will go over everything in our first zoom meeting.
One of the requirements of the course is for the student to work alongside an experienced educator for 60 hours during the term. That averages to be approximately 6 hours per week.
In our current virtual/hybrid instructional environment, practicum experiences necessarily will look different than in the past. While you are not required to do any kind of direct instruction, the practicum student will be asked to do the following:
1. Sit in on an virtual classroom session teachers are holding to observe instruction and interaction with students. Journaling and reflection of your observations will be required.
3. If there are small group help sessions, you could play a tutoring role for students needing support. This is not required, but possible.
2. Connect with the teacher at convenient times for both parties (virtually or f2f using appropriate precautions) to discuss lessons and any questions you may have.
We will meet as a class through CANVAS every Tuesday for 50 minutes starting at 4:30. I use this time to focus on a particular educational topic, have opportunities for all of you to share what you are experiencing in the practicum and listen to reflections and questions. Each week, you will be asked to consider a particular element of the classroom environment and write a paper based on readings, observations and personal experiences. These topics will be the basis of questions you will be asking of your supervising teachers.
Please fill out this google form to let me know your current status of arranging for a practicum. https://forms.gle/mReaZbFTaQgsWmQ39
Also...some of you have been asking about the textbook. It should be posted on the UCC Bookstore website. I know that many students purchase e-copies from other vendors. It is also ok to have older versions. They don't tend to be all that much different.
Please let me know if you have any questions!
