The Lion's Roar
SEPTEMBER 2024
Oak Hills Families,
The first full three weeks of the school year are in the books. I want to express my appreciation for your continued support and involvement at Oak Hills. September brings an exciting lineup of activities, including football and volleyball games, cross country meets, choir and band concerts, various clubs/organization meetings and the always much anticipated Fall Dance. These events provide wonderful opportunities for our students to showcase their talents and dedication, and we encourage you to join us in cheering them on and investing in ways to enrich your student's junior high experience. Stay tuned for more details on upcoming events and how you can get involved. Thank you for being a vital part of our school family!
Go Lions!

FREEDOM WEEK
Each year, during the week that includes September 17, Texas schools honor 'Celebrate Freedom Week' to highlight the values and ideals on which the United States was founded as well as the sacrifices that were made for freedom in the founding of the country. Students learn about the intent, meaning, and importance of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Students also examine the relationship between the ideas in these documents and subsequent American history.
Celebrate Freedom Week coincides with Constitution Week, established by the U.S. Congress to encourage all Americans to learn about the Constitution. Both Celebrate Freedom Week and Constitution Week focus on September 17, the date in 1787 when delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution. Congress has also designated September 17 of each year as Constitution Day.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
PARENTING WITH COMPASSION
Today’s world seems filled with conflict, fear, and need.
It can be overwhelming to look around with eyes of
compassion. Caring is hard, and it usually comes with a
cost.
Yet compassion for our teens is about taking caring
one step further. It’s caring plus humility. It’s humbling
yourself to put someone else’s needs before your
agenda. It’s taking time out of your day to show
someone you care. Compassion is also caring plus
vulnerability. It takes bravery and vulnerability to show
compassion to someone else— especially someone
outside of your immediate friend group or family.
As we seek to develop compassionate young people,
we should remember that acts of compassion might be
difficult for our teens as they discover who they are and
how they can impact the world around them.
Questions to ask your student:
• What are some ways you know I care about you? What specifically do I do for you that makes you know I care?
• How might we (you) show caring to someone else?
• Who is the most compassionate person you know? What does she/he say or do that identifies him/her as a caring person?
THE CLINIC CHRONICLE
Hello Lion Family!
Welcome back to another busy, and exciting school year! There is a lot of information at the beginning of the school year so here are the highlights of the most important clinic information we would like to pass to you all.
*All medications require a doctor’s signature yearly to be administered on campus. This now includes over the counter medications due to a change in the Texas State Nursing laws. We do not roll consents over from school year to school year and we do not hold medications over the summer. Students are not allowed to transport or pick up medications.
*Health condition paperwork and action plans need to be done EVERY school year. Orders do not carry over to the next school year and health conditions are not updated automatically to your student’s profile in Skyward for teachers and staff without proper documentation.
*Please ensure your child knows their phone numbers! With the new cell phone policy, we can only help students with numbers we have in Skyward so please ensure your information is up to date.
*Immunizations- 7th Grade Parents - The State of Texas Immunization Law requires a Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) Vaccine (with in the last 5 years) and Meningococcal Vaccine for 7th grade.
*If your student has an exemption the original affidavit must be turned into the clinic, not a copy.
We hope you have a happy and healthy start to the school year!
Thank you!
Nurse James & Mrs. Bailey
*Information on exclusions from immunization requirements, provisional enrollment, and acceptable documentation of immunizations may be found in §97.62, §97.66, and §97.68 of the Texas Administrative Code, respectively and online at https://www.dshs.texas.gov/immunize/school/default.shtm
*Instructions for requesting the official exemption affidavit that must be signed by parents/guardians choosing the exemption for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief, can be found at www.dshs.texas.gov/immunize/school/exemptions.aspx . The original Exemption Affidavit must be completed and submitted to the school. The law does not allow parents/guardians to elect an exemption simply because of inconvenience (for example, a record is lost or incomplete and it is too much trouble to go to a physician or clinic to correct the problem). Students may be excluded in times of emergency or epidemic declared by the commissioner of public health.
ATTENDANCE
MISD ATTENDANCE POLICY & Frequently Asked Questions
To view the MISD Attendance Policy and Frequently Asked Questions click HERE
Here are a few tips to consider:
● Have your student arrive at school on time and attend every class period, especially the official attendance-taking period (9:15 AM JH and HS).
● A student who is tardy to class will be subject to the consequences established at each campus in accordance with the possible consequences in the MISD Student Code of Conduct.
● What happens if your student needs to see a doctor/dentist/therapist? If possible, we encourage you to schedule appointments outside of school hours. Obtain and submit a medical note for documentation to provide to your student’s Campus Attendance Specialist. Documentation is needed so the absence will be coded correctly.
● When you receive an absence notification, please follow up with your student and the campus attendance specialist. If you have documentation for your student’s absence, please submit as early as possible (it is recommended to submit within 48 hours). If you believe a teacher has marked a student incorrectly, please have your student reach out to the teacher of the marked period.
