August Board of Education Notes

Meeting Recap
The District 146 Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 12 at the Robert Procunier Administration Center.
During the meeting, the Board heard the following from Superintendent Dr. Jeff Stawick:
- The carpeting project at the Ad Center has been finished. While the area was cleared out, the Maintenance Team took the opportunity to replace the fluorescent lighting with LED lights which will reduce energy consumption and electricity costs.
- The first phase of the CMS roofing project is finished. The second phase will be completed during weekends this fall. The restoration will provide a leak-free building as the District moves forward with interior upgrades at CMS slated for next summer.
- The District participated in National Night Out sponsored by the Village of Tinley Park and the Tinley Park Police Department. Vern Bettis and Keegan Kociss from the District office, along with Dr. Don Hantson and Kevin Kuzanek from Central, were on hand to distribute District-branded items and information to the attendees.
- Elementary schools have set up opportunities this week for new kindergarten families and families new to the District to visit the buildings. On Thursday, Central will be hosting an orientation for incoming 6th graders and a parent night for 6th grade parents.
- On Tuesday, August 20, Dr. Stawick will give his annual keynote address to staff. The event will begin at 8 a.m. and include an address from the Board President Darcy Nendza, the keynote, and staff recognitions.
- Wednesday, August 21 is the first day of school for students. It will be a half-day student attendance day.
- An updated version of the intergovernmental agreement between the District and the Village of Tinley Park was on the Village’s agenda. The Board of Education will be asked to approve the updated agreement once the ratified version is received from the village.
The Board also heard the following:
- Dr. Wendy Wolgan, Director of Curriculum, reported that over the summer, teachers and administrators from the Curriculum Department made updates to clarify and strengthen curriculum resources. The adjustments were made to streamline the District’s alignment to standards.
- Dr. Wolgan also told the Board about the District’s Teacher Induction Week that kicked off on August 6 and finishes on August 13. New staff members heard about the Framework for Teaching, CHAMPS strategies, and the Workshop model. They also learned about District 146 policies, procedures, and opportunities.
- The ESP Union president shared that paraprofessionals are participating in training this week. They will be taking part in IEP, CPI, and technology training and preparing for the beginning of the school year.
- Jeff Charleston, Director of Business Services and CSBO, presented the Fiscal Year 2025 budget. The Board will be asked to approve the budget at the September meeting.
The Board took the following action at the meeting:
- Approved policy changes recommended by the Policy and Governance Committee.
- Approved a bid for the purchase of five new tubas for Central Middle School.
Before adjourning, the Board met in closed session to discuss personnel matters.

Next Board Meeting
The next regular Board of Education meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on September 12, 2024. The meeting will be held at Kruse Education Center, 7617 Hemlock Drive in Orland Park.

The District 146 Policy & Governance Committee reviews the policy revisions suggested by the Policy Reference Education Subscription Service (PRESS). Those suggestions are forwarded to the Board of Education for review.
The Board receives the revisions during a first read and votes after the second read.
