October 30, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
Lighthouse families,
November is almost here. We have three solid weeks of learning before the Thanksgiving holiday. This is an important learning time as students continue to participate in design thinking learning experiences, complete projects and work on their individual learning goals. Thank you for continuing to support your student getting to school each day on time. Remember that we do not have school this Friday, November 1. Staff will be engaging in professional learning.
Facilitators appreciated the recent connections and conversations during conferences. These conversations, along with continued communication, help us partner to support each student's success with academic and career and life skills competencies. We are looking forward to Curriculum Night next Wednesday, November 6, 3:15-4:15 p.m. During this time, we will start by giving an overview of the design thinking learning experiences. Parents will then have the opportunity to go into their child’s advisory for a closer look at what students are doing.
Please be planning for our first Extended Learning Day coming up on November 8. These days are designed for students to do work outside of school related to their learning goals. Students concurrently enrolled at the high school or Westwood Band will still have those classes on November 8. Students that are taking courses at Spring Lake Park High School should still check in at the Lighthouse prior to their class. To be dismissed at the end of the school day, students will need a written note from their guardian or a guardian to pick them up. If your child is taking band at Westwood they will need to be picked up in the main office after class.
Tomorrow is Halloween, and we know many students and families participate in a variety of Halloween-inspired activities. Please remember that we do not celebrate Halloween during the school day. Please keep any costumes and treats at home to enjoy after school. And, remember this weekend is the end of daylight savings time. We turn our clocks back by one hour.
Have a great week!
With gratitude,
Lisa Cisewski
Coordinator of Lighthouse School
Spring Lake Park Schools
Issues with MyStop app
If you have bus riders in your household and use the MyStop app, please be aware that the app is experiencing issues. Due to a software configuration problem, the MyStop app (that provides real time bus route information) is not functioning properly. All of the entities that support the app are actively working to correct the problem. Transportation will notify bus riding families when the issues has been resolved. Thank you for your patience. Any questions can be directed to transportation@district16.org.
Volunteers needed!

On art days, Central Command hums with artists at work!
Third through eighth grade students are studying the seven elements of art in class this year. Earlier in the trimester, we created neurographic art to use the element of line, incorporating zentangles and watercolor to add mood and movement.
We moved on to work with color, using the primary colors to create a color wheel and then using those pieces to create our names for colorful display in the hallway.
We will continue our studies adding the element of shape this week and looking at abstract artists Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky, Sonya Delaumay, and Kazimir Malevich, all artists from the early 20th century.
The competencies are:
I can use personal experiences, knowledge and/or historical understanding to generate ideas for original artwork.
I can create original artwork that communicates personal meaning and/or historical understanding, applying artistic foundations.

8 Reasons Families Choose Spanish Immersion

Spring Lake Park Schools has approximately 1,100 PreK-12 students in Spanish Immersion programming. Over the years, we've discovered several reasons why families choose immersion. For many, beyond language acquisition, immersion programing comes with a variety of other benefits that set students up for success in a diverse, multilingual world.
Check out eight of the most common reasons families choose immersion and make sure to share this article with family, friends and neighbors who may be considering immersion for their child.
