SIBLING APPLICATIONS DUE FOR 2025-26 SCHOOL YEAR
SIGN UP FOR AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES DUE
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Dear Edison Families,
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and the national holiday this month, we are excited to kick off our Kindness and Justice Challenge. Dr. King dedicated his life to fighting for equality, justice, and kindness, and his teachings continue to inspire us all. As a school community, we want to honor his legacy by helping our students understand and live out the values of Kindness and Justice—two essential principles that Dr. King championed in his pursuit of a more just and compassionate world.
Dr. King once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” This powerful message reminds us that when we stand up for kindness and justice in our daily lives, we contribute to a greater, more equitable society. By engaging our students in this challenge, we are not only teaching them about Dr. King’s impact, but also encouraging them to apply these values in their own actions.
The Kindness and Justice Challenge will kick off with a special assembly this Wednesday and run from January 29 to February 28. For the first two weeks, students will focus on performing Kind Acts, and for the second two weeks, they will turn their attention to Just Acts. Throughout the month, students will reflect on their acts and record them on strips of paper, which will be linked together to form a visual display of kindness and justice across our school. Our goal is for each class to contribute at least 100 kind or just acts!
To further deepen their understanding, every classroom will engage in Read Aloud activities featuring books like Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Act (focused on kindness) and Say Something (focused on justice). These stories will help students connect Dr. King’s vision to practical actions they can take in their own lives.
This challenge also supports the development of Socio-Cultural Competence, one of the core pillars of our Dual Immersion Program. By focusing on kindness and justice, we are nurturing our students' empathy, respect, and understanding of the diverse world around them. Dr. King’s dream of a beloved community, where all people are treated with dignity and fairness, is exactly what we are striving to cultivate here at school.
We invite you to join us in this effort by talking with your child about what Kind and Just Acts look like and asking, “What kind or just act did you do today?” Together, we can help our students grow into compassionate, thoughtful, and globally-minded individuals—just as Dr. King envisioned.
Thank you for your continued support!
Warmly,
Directora Ipiña

IMMIGRATION STATUS
In response to last week's decision by the new administration to overturn the sensitive locations policy, we want to reaffirm that SMMUSD and Edison Language Academy remain unwavering in our commitment to ensuring every student, regardless of immigration status, has access to a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment. We have received guidance on what to do if an agent comes to school. Our district leadership will control the situation. Parents will be contacted immediately.

Edison Library Wishlist
Great news! Our students love to read and they are asking for more! We work very hard to ensure all of our students learn to read in both languages. Our skilled teachers and our wonderful collection of books play a crucial role in making sure that happens. Our students are always asking for more books, but we can't always meet the demand. Would you like to help? Click here to see our Edison Library Wishlist. If you would like to buy a book and donate it to our library, our students would be very grateful.
