FREE breakfast and lunch for ALL Corbett SD students
All students may receive ONE free breakfast and ONE free lunch each day. Students will be charged for any food or drink in addition to the free meal. Students may choose to eat a meal brought from home and not take the free meal. Please remind your children to only take a free meal if they intend on eating it. We do not want to waste food that others could eat. Also, please be patient for the first couple of weeks as Seth, our kitchen manager, works through this new process. If you have money still in your child’s MealTime account, you may choose to donate it to the school or receive a refund. Please complete this form to let us know which option you choose.

Welcome New Staff
We have a new K-2 teacher at CAPS!
“Hello Corbett community!!
My name is Janae, I'm an Oregon native and I've had the privilege of living in many different cities across the US and in Germany for 3 years. I'm a mom of 3: a rising kindergartener, a sassy 3 year old and a scrumptious 6 month old. In my free time you can find me traveling, gardening, playing outside or trying to keep my house clean! I previously worked at a Waldorf inspired school with a focus on the arts, fostering innate creativity and human development, and creating a collaborative community. This will be my 10th year teaching and I'm beyond excited to join the Corbett community!!”
Thank you to Erin Gibbs for sprucing up the garden beds at Corbett Middle School

Cross Country
Our Cross Country season is off to a great start. We’ve completed our first race (a 3k time trial on campus) and many athletes posted better-than-expected times. Our first official race of the season will be on Friday, August 30th. The MSY 3k Relays will be one of two relay races we run. Cross Country so often feels like a solitary sport so we really appreciate opportunities to compete in relays.
All results of official races will be posted on https://www.athletic.net/team/75/cross-country/2024. You can check out upcoming races and see how our team is progressing.
Some of our runners on an off-campus run to Women’s Forum picture below.
Oregon Highschool Equestrian Team will be starting up soon!!!
Ohset athletes learn more than just equestrian skills, but life skill as well. To be involved 8th grades can be grooms and 9th- 12th grades can be athletes.
The groom position:
- help set up patterns and other equipment for athletes to use.
- help athletes to clean and prepare their horse to show.
- can ride before or after practices without coaching. ( that runs a risk of their high school eligibility if they are coached).
- does not have to have access to there own horse
Athletes:
- compete in events such as: sorting, working rancher, roping, daubing, showmanship, in-hand trail, dressage, English EQ., western Eq., reining, in-hand obstacle relay, bi-wrangle, Canadian flags, barrels, poles, fig. 8, key hole, individual flags and much more!
- compete in three district meets to qualify for state and then potentially regionals.
- is required to have their own horse or access to someone else's horse they can ride and haul to events
Once I get a first meeting date set up with the school I will announce those details. For now please reach out to me at corbetthorses@gmail.com or 503-319-6302.
I look forward to hearing from you!

From the Health Room
Welcome back to the 2024-2025 school year! Your health team is: Julie Nakamura, RN and Cheryl Reams, School Health Assistant. We are here to make sure your student has a healthy and safe experience at school.
Your child’s safety is our priority. If your child has a chronic health condition or takes medication at school then please let us know so we can provide an appropriate level of support to keep your child healthy and ready to learn at school. Even if your child is a self-manager of their health condition we would appreciate knowing of their health status so we can be aware of and best respond in an emergency situation. Health information is confidential and only shared with staff who would need to know.
For your convenience, you can let us know of your child’s health condition by accessing the Student Health Condition Portal https://www.multnomahesd.org/services/shs on the MESD School Health Services website. Select the health condition that is applicable to your child and complete the necessary forms.
Also, if your child has any medication that needs to be taken during the school day you can access the necessary form(s) at the same website link. Forms are needed even if your student is able to carry and take their own medication.
Examples of medications include:
● Emergency medications: epinephrine auto-injectors for severe allergies, like EpiPens®, albuterol inhalers for asthma, or glucagon for diabetes
● Daily medications: methylphenidate, insulin, etc.
● Over-the-counter medications: ibuprofen (Advil®), acetaminophen (Tylenol®), diphenhydramine (Benadryl®), etc.
If you would prefer a paper copy or to have the forms emailed to you then contact the school health room or front office and we will make that happen! If you prefer to talk with me, your school nurse, before completing any of the forms then you can reach me at (971-235-0364) or (jnakamura@mesd.k12.or.us).
Note: All medications must be kept in their original container. Prescription medication must be in the pharmacy labeled container.
We are available to help you find health resources that you may need or to assist you with any student health concerns.
Stay well and strong!

Michelle Vo
Interview by Michelle Carter Smith
*Corbett School District Board of Directors from October 2015 to June 2024
*Elected to Board Chairman in 2017
Although Michelle Vo's parents were from West Richland, WA, she was born in Pasco. The hospital in Richland would not allow her father to be present at the birth, so her folks made the trek across the river to Pasco. Michelle is the oldest of three children. Her parents live nearby and her two siblings are living in WA. Michelle spent her childhood in the Tri-Cities and loved to play sports and draw. She remembers looking through house plan books and architecture magazines, and then she would draw her floor plans. When she was in second grade, her parents divorced, resulting in various moves locally. She was outgoing and made friends easily at each new school. When she was in the fifth grade, she was in a mixed-grade classroom and was moved up to the sixth-grade mid-year. When Michelle was only 14, she sought sponsorship with the local Rotary Club to be an exchange student in New Zealand. She says living for a year in a country that was very different culturally than where she grew up was a life-changing experience and built her self-confidence. Michelle continued to draw throughout her childhood as well as play basketball. In middle and high school, CTE (career technical education) was where she thrived, particularly in woodshop and drafting! She attended the state level Technology Student Association competitions and won several awards.
After high school graduation, she attended the Univ. of Washington and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies. Michelle was accepted to the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) for graduate school. She applied for and received numerous scholarships and financial aid to attend UW but needed to take out several loans to attend graduate school. She says it was well worth it! She spent her first two semesters of her graduate program at the school’s Switzerland campus, then moved to their main campus in Los Angeles to finish her master's degree, graduating in 1997.
Michelle's first job out of school was in Santa Monica at a high-end design architecture firm as a part of their design staff. While there, she wrote out her personal goals, including her three "dream projects" to design schools, fire stations, and airports. She had a desire to work on projects that reflected her natural interests, and she enjoyed sorting out complexity, believing there is beauty in efficiency, organization and simplicity. She designed public schools for five years, fire stations for five years, and airports for over 20 years! Community projects are of great importance to her. She has been with Hennebery Eddy Architects for 21 years where she is vice president and principal architect of the firm’s aviation projects. She oversaw the Concourse E extension at the PDX Airport which added gates E5-11 and is now the architect for the terminal expansion of the Redmond, OR airport. Michelle was interested in getting on the Corbett School Board to contribute to passing the bond with a balanced budget and use her expertise to help with permitting and design of the new Corbett Middle School building. All this ties back to starting her career working on public school projects!
Michelle's son Viking was born in 2009 and her daughter Norway was born in 2011. Tuesdae and Michelle met while she was living in LA, and they moved to Portland and married in 2007. They bought and remodeled their first home before their kids were born, then moved to Corbett in 2011. They wanted to live near Michelle's parents in the Gorge, but she needed to be close enough to work in Portland. They sold their Corbett home in 2016 after their divorce, and Michelle bought a different home in Corbett. When Viking was 4-1/2 years old, he was diagnosed with autism. Michelle educated herself and became a strong advocate for him to receive the services he needed. She fought the insurance company through their appeals process and won, staying up late nights to write a 122-page appeal document. After winning, she redacted personal information from the document then shared it with local autism advocacy groups so it could become a template for other families of special needs kids to win their appeals.
Norway just graduated from CAPS where the unique environment allowed her creative skills to flourish! Michelle strongly advocates for mixed-grade classrooms, and believes they contributed Norway skipping a grade as Michelle had. Next year Norway will attend The Northwest Academy High School in Portland, and Viking will continue at his special needs public high school, Pacific Academy.
As a family, they love to be outdoors, especially near water. Traveling to warm places near water such as Mexico and Hawaii allows the family to surf, paddleboard, and swim together. Rob, her partner of five years, is her best friend and has two adult daughters. Together they purchased a home in the Gorge last year and are remodeling it. They admired the home when they first began dating, never dreaming it would one day be their forever home!
