1ST GR LIT: UNIT 5, Weeks 1-3

Unit 6: Week 1
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a fantasy story.
- I can respond to a fantasy story by writing a new story.
- I know about ways we can work together to make our lives better.
Key Concepts:
- This week our class will be focusing on how we can work together to make our lives better. We will discuss some of the rights and responsibilities of people.
- I’ll say a word. You look at the list of words below and tell me which one means almost the same thing as the word I say. Listen as I say each word: 1. response, 2. active, 3. eyeballs, 4. disaster, 5. gate, 6. plenty, 7. carried, and 8. insist.
- I’ll write your spelling words on separate slips of paper, but with missing letters that stand for the vowel sound. Then we will turn the slips upside down. Pick a word, I’ll say the word, and you write the missing letters.
Comprehension: Comprehension: Theme (click on the link to access the reading)
- Let’s think about a story with this theme: “Working together makes our lives better.” First, color the pictures below that have this theme, and cross out the others. Then choose one picture and tell me a story about the theme.
Unit 6: Week 2
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a nonfiction text.
- I can respond to a nonfiction text by writing a new text.
- I know about different people who help others.
Key Concepts:
- This week our class will be focusing on who helps us. We will name and discuss neighborhood people that help us and other people who help society.
Words to Know: brother, picture, love, mother, friend, often, father, accept
- First let’s read all the words aloud. Then I’ll say a word. You read a word from the list that is the opposite of the word I say. Listen carefully as I say each word: 1. never, 2. enemy, 3. sister, 4. mother, 5. father, 6. hate, and 7. reject.
Spelling/Phonics: haul, cause, saw, claw, paw, dawn; review: moon, soup
- I’ll show you all of the words. You read them aloud. Then I will cover the words. Let’s see how many of the words you can remember and write correctly. We can try it again if you forget some words.

- An author might write a story to entertain us, persuade us, or to give information. Let’s read each story together. What is the author’s purpose for each story?
Unit 6: Week 3
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand realistic fiction.
- I can use text evidence to respond to realistic fiction.
- I know about how weather can affect us.
- I can write an opinion text.
Key Concepts:
- This week our class will be focusing on how weather affects us. We will discuss how weather changes from day to day and identify patterns in weather.
Words to Know: been, year, question, their, month, gathers, children, country
- I’ll say two words from the list. You make up a sentence using both words in it. Then I will take a turn. We will keep making up sentences for word pairs until we have used all the words in sentences.
Comprehension: Comprehension: Events/Cause and Effect (click the link to access the story)
- Let’s read the story together. Then we can work together to figure out the causes and effects for the events in the story.
