Good morning Fulton Families,
Last week was Bus Safety Week. To help reinforce these safety habits, we practiced bus evacuations.
We encourage you to take a few moments to talk with your child about bus safety. Topics like staying seated, listening to the bus driver, and keeping the aisles clear can help make the ride safer for everyone. Your support at home is invaluable in helping us keep our students safe every day!
Thank you for partnering with us to promote bus safety.
Wishing you wave of joy,
Dr. Burks, Mrs. Liwosz, & Mrs. Sillers
Standards Based Instruction and Grade Reporting
As we are coming to the end of quarter 1, we want to remind families that the PreK-2 report cards were updated last year, and the grades 3-5 report cards are new this year. These report card shifts are due to HCPSS implementing the Standards Based Instruction and Reporting (SBIR) process, per Policy 8010 – Grading and Reporting: Pre-Kindergarten Through Grade 5. With the shift to SBIR, grades are based on the student's proficiency with the grade-level curriculum standards.
The Standards Based Instruction and Reporting Family and Community Resources Canvas course provides important information about SBIR. This includes documents to assist in Understanding Your Child's Report Card.
Academic Performance Codes represent what has been learned - where the student is in relation to the expectation of the grade level standard. It is intended to reflect the progress toward meeting the Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards for their current grade level.
For students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), detailed progress toward IEP goals is provided in the Annual Goal(s) Progress Report that is sent at the same time as the HCPSS report card. A student’s IEP goals address the identified skills that support their progress toward meeting grade level standards.

Veteran's Day @ FES
FES is celebrating Veterans Day on Monday, November 11, 2024. We will read information about Veterans Day on the morning announcements and we would be honored to host our veterans for a light breakfast and assembly. Please RSVP here by November 4 if you plan to attend our event. Due to space, we only ask that our veterans join us for this event. In honor of our veteran family members, we would love to highlight people in your life who have served our country. If your child would like to share information about the Veteran(s) in their family, please help them to create a mini poster. The students can do this electronically with this google slide or can create their own! Please note that these will be on display and may not be returned. If you do not have access to a color printer, please email to jomika_tatum@hcpss.org by Nov 6 to ensure time to print the finished product.

Worth Repeating
Standard Based Reporting (SBIR)
As a reminder, all grade levels have moved to Standards Based Instruction and Reporting (SBIR) this year, this includes PreK-5th Grade. While this is not new for our primary students and families, this is the first year for our students and families in 3rd-5th grade. We encourage you to take some time to review the following resources:
- Elementary Standards Based Instruction and Reporting for Families website (watch the primary or intermediate screencast)
HCPSS Academic Resources
As we approach the end of the first marking period, we would like to remind you of the academic resources available on the HCPSS website. You can select the content you are interested in learning more about to support your child’s learning at home. The mathematics family support center and the English/Language Arts pages by grade include activities and lessons for the major skills taught in each grade. These include how to help your child pick a “just right book” to read at home, and the compensation strategy for addition and subtraction.
Should you have further questions about your child’s progress and learning, please save the date for parent conferences the afternoon/evenings the week of November 25th.
Character Trait Corner
This week, make a list with your children of times when self-control is toughest. Some good ideas might be setting goals to limit screen time, responding with kindness, sticking to a bedtime, eating healthy foods, listening and following directions at school, developing an exercise program. Try to set some goals and monitor progress as you help your child practice self-control.
Picture Make Up Day
Students who were absent on Picture Day or would like a retake will have their individual pictures taken on Friday, November 8. More information about purchasing and requesting a retake will be coming soon!
