Dear McMillan Families:
Schools are successful when we help children grow academically, socially, and emotionally together. For this to happen, it is imperative that we have an environment that is supportive and conducive for growth. By setting forth clear expectations and directly teaching and reinforcing those expectations along with regular attendance, we will achieve our goal of creating a positive culture that focuses on learning at high levels.
To accomplish this, we are focusing on a positive behavior support system (PBS) and expecting regular attendance. Our PBS system has four main components.
· Defining specific, targeted behaviors
· Teaching lessons that explicitly outline those expectations
· Providing acknowledgment to celebrate the positive behavior needed to learn at high levels
· Reteaching, monitoring, and holding our students accountable for those expectations
Our school-wide expectations to promote positive behavior to learn at high levels are as follows:
· Engage in productive learning
· Maintain a safe and clean environment
· Share space effectively
Our school-wide attendance goal is 95% or higher attendance. That is all students missing no more than 8 days of school per year. This means all students should be at school on time for at least 164 school days. This is for all absences including sicknesses, parent-excused, pre-arranged and appointments.
We will celebrate staff and students’ success through:
· Verbal recognition
· Eagle Eyes
· Weekly Drawings with announcements
· Quarterly Drawings with announcements
· School-wide celebrations
· Other classroom acknowledgment systems
At McMillan, we are committed to teaching our students to be successful citizens and the skills necessary to learn at high levels. We are effective with this when we can collaborate with our parents. We are counting on your support and look forward to partnering with you this year.
Thank you,
PBS Team: Sara DiGrazia, Adam Wahab, Bailey Martin, Julie Matsushita, Casey Urban, Grethe Wood, and Cerra Tesch

Attendance Goals
McMillan's attendance goal for 2024-2025 is for all students to be at school on time at least 164 school days.
Why?
Absenteeism might be habitual.
Students with the worst attendance in kindergarten continue to have attendance issues in 5th grade (Source: Buehler, Taponga, & Chang, 20212)
60% of chronically absent first graders (Baltimore) continued to be chronically absent through their high school years (Buehler et al., 2012).
Impact on Education
Of students who attended school regularly in K and 1st, 64% were proficient readers at the end of 3rd grade (Bruner, Discher, & Chang, 2011).
Of students who were chronically absent in K and 1st, 17% were proficient readers at the end of 3rd grade (Bruner, Discher, & Chang, 2011).
We are looking forward to a successful year!
