November Dates to Remember
Principal's Message
Dear High School Families,
As we step into November, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for our incredible school community. This month brings not only a time for reflection and thankfulness but also many exciting activities and learning opportunities for our students.
Thanksgiving reminds us to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our teachers, staff, and families. Your support plays a crucial role in our students' success, and together, we create a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
In November, we’ll be celebrating our Veteran's during our Veteran's Day Ceremony on November 8th. Please join us in honoring our active and retired veterans.
In addition, we have made a parent training regarding Fortify Florida. Please see the video for parents in addition to the resources provided earlier below. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership. Wishing you and your family a wonderful month filled with joy and gratitude.
Warm regards,
Megan Brink

Attendance Reminder--- Please check FOCUS
Please take a moment to check FOCUS for your student's attendance. We have a busy campus with busy students! Please double check your student's attendance to verify that all absences that should be excused are excused. Not only do we want accurate attendance records, but this also impacts your student's ability to participate in the exam exemption at the end of the year. If you need an attendance correction, please contact attendance@fsus.school.
A message from National Spanish Honor Society
The National Spanish Honor Society would like your help in honoring Veterans’ Day and contributing to our campus’ Veterans’ Day ceremony on Thursday, November 7.
You can assist us in two ways:
- Donating a Flag
We are currently seeking donations of flags representing every branch of the United States Armed Forces. If you can donate or loan a flag, please drop it off at the front office or send it directly to my classroom (Room 3-135) by Monday, November 4th.
Please use the following link to donate a flag: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4EACAD29A5F4C16-52701795-veterans
- Submitting a Service Member Form
If you have any family members or friends who have served or are currently serving in the United States military, please submit their name and military branch to be displayed in the school.
Please use the following link to submit the information:

These service members will be highlighted in a commemorative display at our school’s front gate, to honor their sacrifices for our country. Your generous donations will help foster a sense of patriotism and appreciation for our nation's history.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at mvillagrana@fsu.edu
Thank you for your continued support of our school community.

Kahn Academy- even has AP courses
If you are looking to do some test prep, consider Kahn Academy. It not only has a section for SAT, but also has reviews for certain AP courses.
PSAT and Big Futures
PSAT scores are here! All 10th graders and any 11th graders who tested should have access to their PSAT scores in their College Board accounts. The average PSAT/NMSQT score is about 920. A score between 1210 and 1520 puts you in the top 10% of test takers.
The PSAT/NMSQT and the SAT are very similar tests, so your score on the PSAT/NMSQT can give you an idea of how you’ll do when you take the SAT.
Also, Sign in to BigFuture and Explore:
- CAREERS: Explore careers that you're passionate about on BigFuture by taking the Career Quiz and learning how your test performance aligns to 1,000 occupations with our career readiness indicator.
- COLLEGES: Search over 3,000 college profiles on BigFuture to discover which colleges and programs are right for you. Filter by location, major, and more.
- SCHOLARSHIPS: Use your scores to access scholarships from BigFuture Scholarships, and thousands of others.

Practice Prostart Competitions in Culinary
Culinary students did a practice run for their Prostart competition! In the competition, there is limited equipment students can use and are judged on a variety of things like taste, appearance, and difficulty.
How could we judge?!
Dr. Small and I got to taste and judge each group's recipes. So impressed with the students! Everything from homemade noodles to fried Oreos!
Honor Roll Ice Cream
Congratulations to our students that got Honor Roll Ice Cream! I was so impressed with how many students received this honor in high school! Way to go students.
Mr. Hanson's Symphonic Band Class
Do you know the differences between lyrical style and march style music? Students learned the differences and performed the different styles during his symphonic band rehearsal. I even learned that a "dogfight" is a device used in marches and piano rags to introduce a contrast in style and break the flow of the composition with a loud and intense musical statement.
Dr. Mehta's AP Environmental Science Class
Dr. Mehta's AP Environmental Science students investigated the physical and chemical composition of soil from their yards and gardens. They tested nitrate, phosphorus, potassium, and pH levels, calculated water percolation rate, and measured the sand, silt, and clay content of their soils.
Ms. Russell's English class
Ms. Russell's English class analyzed a text to identify themes through the author's character development in Fahrenheit 451. Students worked in multiple groups to identify and discuss evidence in text as it relates to the character, including metaphors and symbolism, to determine theme.

See Something, Hear Something, Say Something
As we have discussed with our students, it's important to notify a teacher, counselor, administrator, or police officer if a student is in need of help, if there is a concerning behavior, or a student is in crisis. Sometimes as parents, we hear concerns from our students at home. Please contact us immediately if you hear any concerning reports. Besides reaching out to an administrator, we have an online anonymous reporting tool on our website at the bottom of the home page (fsus.school).
Fortify Florida (https://getfortifyfl.com/) is also a tool available for reporting. Fortify Florida is a suspicious activity reporting tool that allows you to instantly relay information to appropriate law enforcement agencies and school officials across the state. Please note that someone who knowingly submits a false tip through FortifyFL may be subject to further investigation by law enforcement and may be subject to criminal penalties under section 837.05, F.S.
IMPORTANT!
Families and students, all threats will be taken seriously and will result in severe consequences up to and including arrest, restitution and expulsion. Parents, we urge you to discuss this issue with your students. Please know that false threat, even if intended as a joke can result in life-altering consequences.
