The Buzz
Autumn Term -26th September 2024
Message from the Head of School
Dear Parents/Carers,
What a wet week it has been but this certainly hasn't dampened the enthusiasm throughout the school! Today year 3 have attended their first visit to Butser Ancient farm. This is always a brilliant trip, linked to their current history topic, and I am sure that they will all come back with many stories to tell! A huge thank you to the volunteers that have helped on this visit - we couldn't do it without you. On this, we have another volunteer meeting being held tomorrow at HJS at 9.00am - I hope to see some of you there.
On Monday 30th, we have our first parent workshop of the year. This will have a 'Reading and Phonics' focus and will be delivered by Mrs Gregory and Miss Smith. As reading is such a vital part of your child's success, I do hope we have lots of parents attending. This session was well received last year and provided parents with an insight in how to best support their children at home.
In October the school will be completing a number of activities linked to Black History month. Mrs Bienge has put together a fantastic programme of events in which the children will learn about a variety of important figures from the past and their stories. We will share further information with families throughout the month.
Playground Behaviour
Tomorrow in assembly, I will be speaking to the children about behaviour on the playground and emphasising the importance of following the 'bee rules' (see below). We will be introducing a new token system whereby if a child demonstrates exceptional behaviour on the playground they may receive a 'silver token'. This token will then be placed in a 'token collection station' which is organised into the children's houses. These tokens will be counted at the end of each half term. The winning house will be allocated an additional mufti day to celebrate the model behaviour.
Our Bee Rules
At Hampton Junior School we have 5 bee rules. These rules help us to have a happy and successful school. They are:
🐝Be kind to others
🐝Be a good listener
🐝Be respectful towards yourself, others and the school environment
🐝Be hardworking and challenge yourself
🐝Be responsible
Be the best you can be!
Mr J James

Reminder that Ink Pot commences next Tuesday and Friday. This will be held in the Cube during lunch time instead of the library. Please can you ensure you check your child's pencil case and if they would like to purchase anything please ensure your child comes into school with some pennies.

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO RAISE MONEY FOR OUR SCHOOL
Clothing Collection with Rags 2 Riches 4 Schools
Thursday 17th October
Bags will be sent home shortly so start collecting now!
Do you have clothes in your wardrobe that you no longer wear, maybe last year’s fashions, or that buy that was too good to leave but it’s not really you after all?
Please help us fundraise by donating your good quality unwanted, reusable (clean, dry and wearable) clothes and accessories (please pair and tie shoes together)
We get 50p for every kilo we collect of reusable items.
Your donations become affordable clothing in other countries so please do not send uniform, poor quality, dirty or wet items, and no duvets, pillows, curtains, books, CDs or bric-a-brac.
STOP and THINK - is it something you’d wear out and about yourself or pass to a friend? If not, no-one else will want to buy and wear it either, so unfortunately it’s not reusable and can’t go in the bag.
Even if it’s only one t-shirt please bring it in, as it will all help our school.
If you can involve family, friends and neighbours please do.
We truly appreciate your support in helping raise additional funds for our school for the benefit of our children.
There’s no better feeling than knowing you raised funds, helped the economy, the environment, and somebody on the other side of the world – and all by donating some clothes.
If we can fill 100 bags we’ll have half a tonne!
Please bring your donations to school on
Thursday 17th October at drop off.

Orchestra
Orchestra rehearsals are back in full swing this term! If you play an instrument to approximately Grade 1 standard or above and would like to join orchestra on a Wednesday from 3.15-3.55pm, please let Mrs Burbage know. Please note we have no space for pianists at this time.
HJS Achievers
The Girls' Football Team kicked off their season with an impressive 2-1 victory in their first game! The team showed great determination and teamwork. Their hard work and dedication paid off, leading to this well-deserved win. Well done girls, what a fantastic start to the season!
Reading at HJS
At Hampton Junior School, we prioritise reading both in terms of supporting children to develop their reading fluency (ability to read words) and comprehension skills (ability to answer questions about texts they read). Not only this, but we ensure that children are exposed to a range of activities and experiences to ignite their enthusiasm about reading. Some of these activities include: author afternoons, author visits and workshops, visits to Hampton library, regular school library visits and the reading shed in our school playground.
Every term, the children experience an Author Afternoon, carefully selected to explore current issues, variety in text types and the works of BAME authors. This term, the children will participate in a poetry competition, as well as selecting a Reading Ambassador to represent their classes. Later on in the year, we will host a World Book Day celebration. In previous years, this has been a “dress up day” and included some engaging activities to immerse the children in books.
Each class signs up to a library slot, which they visit regularly, to choose books which ignite their interests. These are books children are encouraged to share with an adult at home. Alongside this, their Big Cat Scheme reading books or phonics books are carefully allocated to their current reading level, so please spend time reading these alongside the children at home.
The children are immersed in a range of different texts in school through guided reading and English lessons. These are carefully selected and often connected to other areas of the curriculum, supporting the embedding of their previous learning. For example, in the autumn term, the Year 3s visit texts linked to climate zones and history topics such as the Great Fire of London, to revisit previously-learning KS1 topics.
Online Safety Workshop – Protecting Children and Young People with SEND from online grooming and extremism
At Richmond Parent Carer Forum we’re working with our neighbouring Parent Carer Forum in Wandsworth to offer a workshop discussing online safety for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND.) We will be joined by a Hate Crime and Prevent Co-ordinator from Wandsworth and Richmond Councils, who will be discussing online dangers and what we can do as parent carers to protect our children and young people against grooming (brain washing), extremism, radicalisation and influence on social media.
Parent carers will have an increased understanding of online radicalisation, including awareness (signs/behaviours of the changes due to radicalisation) and effective interventions/diversionary approaches for someone who is vulnerable to radicalisation. We will have a presentation followed by a Q and A session.

HPPA Welcomes Classlist
HPPA are delighted to let you know that from this year we will be moving away from PTA events to a new app called Classlist, letting you quickly and easily book tickets and make payments (it even has Google & Apple Pay!) and is super easy to set up.
Please download the Classlist app using the QR code below and create an account - it’s really simple and only takes a couple of minutes. We’ll be using Classlist for all HPPA fundraisers this year so don’t miss out - our first events (including everyone’s favourite open air cinema, fireworks and sponsored walks) are coming soon!
Classlist is a community app which means you will be able to find other carers / parents in your class and the wider school community. When signing up, the app will ask for some personal data (e.g your phone number and address) but you can skip these questions - this data isn’t essential for sign up. If you have any concerns about safeguarding or being searchable then please let the PTA know on contacthppa@gmail.com and we will ensure you can still access these events.
