April 2025
A Note from our Principal
Welcome to April! I’m ready for some showers☔ and flowers🌺! We’ve already had a taste of warmer weather, and I’m sure we’ll get more of that in the upcoming weeks.
April is a very busy month with programs, fun nights and field trips, and with Kansas State Assessments beginning Tuesday, April 1. It’s important your child is here on time, ready to learn, at 8:45 am. Please make sure your child is here every day, on time, so they get the full benefit of all we do here at CES. The doors to the school open at 8:35 am, and we start serving breakfast immediately, so there’s plenty of time for your child to eat, get unpacked and settled before the 8:45 am bell rings. While we want students on time, please do not drop them off in the front prior to 8:35 am. There is no one there to supervise them. We start moving kids off buses, into the building, and out of cars at 8:35 am; please plan accordingly.
With the warmer weather we are seeing more kids leave hoodies and jackets outside. Our Lost and Found is full! Please put your child’s name in their jacket, and remind your child to check Lost & Found if they are missing something.
Finally, we look forward to seeing you at our Reading Rodeo on Thursday, April 3rd! There will be various stations that will emphasize literacy in its various forms, games and activities, and we’ll be selling pizza by the slice for $1.00 (cash only). It lasts from 5:30-7:00 pm - we hope to see you there!
With education at heart,
Dr. Michelle Adler
Cottonwood Principal
Kindergarten Preview Night
Tuesday, April 1, 2025
6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Come and learn all about kindergarten at Cottonwood Elementary! Meet teachers, tour classrooms and get your questions answered. You'll also receive information about transportation, your school's Parent-Teacher Organization and the YMCA's Key Academy (formerly known as Latchkey).
Please note: This meeting is for parents/guardians only. Kindergartners for the 2025-26 year must be 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2025. Not sure which school they will attend? Find out using our School Assignment Locator at www.usd385.org.
In April the Theme in Counselor Time is Careers. A Career is an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress. Please talk to your child about your career. Talk to them about how you obtained your career. Help them to research possible careers they would enjoy.
Third grade parents, we will have our Career Fair in the parking lot (unless it is raining) of the CAPS building (this is a change of location) on April 25th from 9:15 am-11:15 am. Presenters will need to be there at 9 AM. If you would like to volunteer to talk about your career, please email me and let me know. We would be thrilled to have you!
Students are participating in the Kansas State Assessments for grades three, four, and five. Please make sure that your child is here everyday during testing, that they get a good breakfast and plenty of rest. We want them to do their very best! If you haven't already, please send your letters back to your child’s teacher. If you need another paper please let me know ASAP!

From the health office staff:
The health office has completed all hearing and vision screening for this year. If your student struggled with screening or did not pass, you would have received a phone call and a referral letter from the health office. If you have any concerns about your student’s vision or hearing please contact the health office staff.
With the increase in news concerning Measles outbreaks, the following is just for your information.
- Measles symptoms appear 7 to 14 days after contact with the virus. Measles typically begins with:
- High fever (may spike to more than 104°F)
- Cough
- Runny nose (coryza)
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis/pink eye)
- 2-3 days after symptoms begin, tiny white spots (koplik spots) may appear inside the mouth.
- Measles rash appears 3 to 5 days after the first symptoms. In a typical presentation, which might be seen in under or not-immunized individuals, it usually begins as flat red spots that spread from the head to the trunk, and then out to the arms and legs. Small raised bumps may also appear on top of the flat red spots.
- Small raised bumps may also appear on top of the flat red spots.
- The spots may become joined together as they spread from the head to the rest of the body.
- When the rash appears, a person's fever may spike to more than 104° Fahrenheit.
As we start to wind down the school year, all over-the-counter medication sent into the health office must be picked up by a parent before the last day of school. The health office will begin to send home letters with your student if you have medications to be picked up. Any medications left in the health office after the last day of school will be discarded.
The health office will begin mailing out letters if we are missing any documents from your student’s health file. If you received one and have a question please contact Denise Rebel RN at rebeld@usd385.org.
Thank you,
Denis Rebel, School Nurse

Lost and Found
We have several jackets, coats, and sweatshirts in Lost and Found. We try to remind students to check it out, but we seem to have more lost than found. It is located right by the nurse's office.
