The Lister Weekly Update #8
November 15th, 2023
Your Lister News from the Lister News Team
START OF TERM
We wish all families a happy new year.
Lister is a community school, and we are committed to working with families to ensure that we support all our pupils. We want them to be safe and happy learners.
With this in mind, we will be running a half-termly event that will have two aims: firstly, to discuss key topics with parents and carers; and secondly, to provide parents and carers with the chance to meet with and discuss issues with the Interim Headteacher.
We would like to run the first of these events on THURSDAY JANUARY 25TH. Parents are invited to 'drop in' between 2.15 and 3pm, or between 3.15 and 4pm.
The topic we will be discussing is behaviour. We are currently consulting on our new behaviour policy, and would welcome the chance to talk to parents and carers about this important topic.
You are also welcome to speak with the Interim Headteacher about any other matters.
We look forward to meeting with you on this date. If you are unable to attend but would like to speak to the Interim Headteacher, please do contact the school.
Year 8 Parents' Evening tonight
Please note that it is year 8 Parents' Evening tonight. All of your child's teachers will be available for a short discussion about progress and behaviour. Please note targets for improvement and aim to achieve these in the term ahead.
Other Items
King - Winners of the House Cup
After strong competition from all the house teams, King House won the House Cup! For the next half term the agora will be decorated with king house banners and have blue - the King House colour - hanging from all the balconies. We want to celebrate their success and if your child happens to be a member of King House, then you can congratulate them on their success.
The House Cup is a half termly competition that all the houses enter into. The competition is won by the house with the greatest amount of 'praises' (merits from teachers) won, minus the overall 'concerns' (demerits from teachers). Students get praises for each time they meet the expectations of a teacher in a lesson - arriving on time and meeting the objective for the lesson. Concerns show where students have failed to meet expectations despite warnings.

A Year of Reading at Lister
Last term we launched the Reading Challenge at Lister. All students have a reading age test to show us how advanced they are in reading. Reading is the main skill that will affect students’ results in the final GCSEs and will continue to have a pronounced impact on results throughout their time at school. Students are sorted into bands, depending on their reading ability and there is a reading list of books from the library that matches the right level of challenge for their reading level.
This term Year 9 will have their reading age tests. Following this, all classes from Year 7 to Year 10 will be taken to the library with their English teacher to choose a new book from the suitable reading list.
Please encourage your child to go to the library independently in the meantime and choose a book or two that will help them make progress over the following term. Reading for 20 minutes every day will help elevate students’ grades into the top 90% within their ability category.
