OSS Welcomes Icelandic Middle School Students
Our 8th grade Chemistry classes and OSS ambassadors proudly welcomed 34 International Icelandic middle school students this past Friday, May 11th. Landakots Skoli, a K-10th grade private school located in South Western Iceland, researched Florida's top science schools and contacted us to schedule a visit! Both OSS and our visitors gave presentations about each country's culture and achievements. We learned that Iceland is number one in the Strong Man competitions, and you address others by using their first name, even the president! Mr. Demir lead a chemistry experiment involving aluminum in the cafeteria. The students were then released to Mr. Stampas' Biomedical and Mrs. Barea's Engineering classes. There the visitors were able to do hands on activities with OSS students. The day ended with the OSS and Icelandic students having lunch and exchanging gifts.

On Friday, May 11, 2018 the 8th grade students were able to celebrate their hard work in middle school by attending Gradventure. Students got to experience both Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure parks and enjoy time with their friends. It was a wonderful way to celebrate their accomplishments and we had a blast on the trip. Thank you to everyone who helped chaperone the trip.
Teacher Appreciation Cupcake Grams
The NJHS had hosted a cupcake gram to help raise money towards the Relay for Life goal. The cupcake grams were delivered during Teacher Appreciation Week with a message from the students to their teacher. Thank you to everyone who participated and we look forward to doing this event again.
OSS Senior Awarded as "OSS Key Club Outstanding Student of the Year"
Christina N. was honored as the OSS Key Club Outstanding Student of the Year. She received the award from the Kiwanis Club at a banquet held to honor the outstanding members across the central Florida area. Christina inspires excellent community and professional values amongst her peers at Orlando Science School. She has exuded leadership by serving as an officer is several clubs including Women’s History Club, Key Club, Rho Kappa Honors Society, National Honor Society, Student Government Association, Model United Nations and Youth Advisory Board. She is very involved in her community and served as a volunteer in many capacities including service at Health Central Hospital. Due to her academic excellence she has earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award and is a Questbridge Finalist. Although she has a natural talent and easily grasps material, she goes the extra mile to make sure she is more than prepared for class. She is a self-starter and takes on responsibilities in clubs in a very adult manner. Most significantly she displays a sense of accountability to and for her peers.

OSS Improv Night
OSS Drama Club hosted their very first Improv. Night on Tuesday, May 15. Based on the comedic "Whose Line is It Anyway" show, students participated in various improvisational games such as "Expand It," "Props," and "Monologue Thief." The event was split into two sections to accommodate multi-lingual participants and audience members. Mrs. Harper's Spanish students joined in on the fun by replacing their final written exam with a verbal assessment during the second half of the evening. Some benefits of using improvisation are increased confidence, team development, listening/observation skills, public speaking, and enhanced critical thinking. Special thanks to Ms. Estes for hosting along with NJHS and Mrs. Frunker for volunteering with concessions and admission.
OSS Spring Choir and Band Concert
This past Monday, May 14th, the music programs from the Orlando Science School Lynx Lane and Technology Campus hosted their annual Spring Concert series at the concert hall at Seminole State College - Lake Mary/Sanford campus. The first concert had performances by the Elementary and Technology Middle choral groups, which presented the audience with classic tunes, step routines, and delightful showmanship. The second concert presented the band programs across all of the campuses. The Technology Campus Beginning Band and Advanced Band played some pieces featured on stage and screen, as directed by Ms. Marisa Parrella with assistance from members from our own concert band. The concert was concluded with performances by the Lynx Campus Beginner Band and Concert Band as directed by our own Mr. Andrew Jenkins. The Beginner Band played “High Adventure” and “Rising Star” as a way to show off their progress. The OSS Concert Band played “Suite from Handel’s Water Music”, “The Last Rose of Summer”, and “Portrait of a Clown” to showcase some of the pieces that were other possibilities for MPA this year. The concert was a smashing success with rave reviews from all in attendance. We thank everyone who came out to see and hear all of our music programs and who have supported our music programs throughout the year.
Club of the Week: Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is club for students who love to read! This year, Nikita Agarwal, Shreya Bhat, and Simra Sheikh represented OSS in the OCPS 23rd Annual Middle School Battle of the Books. They each read the fifteen SSYRA books and tested their knowledge against 36 other schools at Winter Park High School. Students had a blast at the competition and got to meet many other book lovers.

Message from The OSS School Counselor Ms. Bumgarner
A Message from the Counselor
Greetings All!
As a school counselor, I receive many e-mails/calls from parents wanting to know what they can do to help their child succeed. Here are a few basic tips!
Expectations
Expect your child to succeed, and their chances for success improve greatly. Expect them to come up short, and the odds are that they will. Children are very aware of how their parents view them, and they often tailor their actions to those views. Communicate your expectations and your rationale behind them to your child. It’s important to base your expectations on your child, not yourself. Remember each child is an individual who has strengths and weaknesses like all individuals.
Environment/Schedule
Create a suitable environment for homework. Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to study. If you do not have internet access at home, please inform the school, they can help brainstorm about ways to get around this roadblock. Create, with your child, a daily schedule. They should study or do homework every day (except for special family events, of course) no more than two hours per day. Be available during homework time to look over homework and give suggestions, but never do your child’s homework for them. Be interested and have them teach you something. Teaching someone else a concept is one of the best ways to learn!
Balance
Academic success is important when it comes to our children. However, teaching our kids how to balance their individual well-being while succeeding academically is also an important skill. This skill of balancing wellness and work is one that can carry them forward into their adult lives. Kids have very little control over their lives. Please don’t pack their schedules full of after school activities without their knowledge. Children of every age need time to relax, play, workout, and take a brain break after their very rigorous school day. Together, choose a couple of activities per week that help them follow their passions or interests. Make sure it fits in your schedule and that you still have time to do schoolwork and enjoy family time.
Lastly, attitude is everything! Consider your attitude about learning new concepts or following directions at your place of work. Keep in mind, children hear everything, and they learn from you daily!
If you have any questions or if you would like to make an appointment to meet with me, feel free to email me.
Sincerely,
Ms. B

Ever ridden a roller coaster? All roller coasters are designed by engineers! The world’s largest steel roller coaster – The Millennium Force – reaches a height of 310 feet, which is longer than a football field! The coaster is also the world’s fastest at 92 miles per hour – faster than a cheetah! Takes a lot of ingenuity and skill to create something that big, fast and safe!

Orlando Science Middle High Home Visits
Dear OSS Parents and Guardians ,
We like to find ways to communicate with parents to support our mutual involvement in your child’s education. As part of OSS tradition, we are organizing home visits as a way to reach out to our families and get to know them better. We would like to set up a time for a few of your students teachers to have a brief 20-30 minute home visit. Home visits are an effective way to establish positive contact and communication with families. They are not a replacement for parent-teacher conferences, but are a process through which teachers demonstrate their support for students’ families by visiting the home environment where the family feels comfortable. Home visits originate from a sincere desire to assist and work with families. We will be glad to visit you and your child at a convenient time. If you would like to host a home visit, please select one of the days below. We will be organizing quarterly home visits. If you are not available during first quarter, you always can choose a day later on in the school year. We look forward to visiting you!
