The eLeader
The official digital newsletter of La Porte ISD
Greetings, La Porte ISD Family.
Today is a great day to be a Bulldog! I love this time of year. It's a time when we have our pick of fall concerts, athletic and schoolwide events just about every day. It is also the first time during each school year when we start to see the fruits of our students' labor, such as postseason playoffs, All-District honors, UIL Sweepstakes awards and the first round of academic accolades for our bright young scholars.
Although fall officially arrived almost a month ago to the day, I am excited that it is finally starting to feel like it! In two weeks, our clocks will fall back an hour. Not long after that, we will enjoy a Thanksgiving break with our families. In the meantime, I hope you join me in supporting our students by attending a game or concert. The Bulldogs Football Team, fresh off of a 34-0 win over Sterling, will wrap up the regular season in a rare Saturday game this week against Crosby. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Barbers Hill ISD's Eagle Stadium. Let's fill the hill! Also, please consider joining us on Saturday morning November 11 for the Project Graduation 5K Run/Walk at Sylvan Beach. This annual event is not only fun, but it also benefits a great program. Scroll down for more information.
Superintendent Shout-outs
- Please join me in congratulating the 36 La Porte High School students, including eight recent graduates, who were named as 2023 AP Scholars. The high academic honor recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through their performance on multiple AP exams.
- Congratulations to the All-District Water Polo honorees and district superlatives who were named for postseason honors this past week. These outstanding student-athletes helped lead their respective teams to the post season. In fact, seven La Porte High School teams qualified for postseason play. Tennis, football, volleyball, boys and girls cross cross country teams round out the list of post season qualifiers. Our Lady Dawgs' playoff opponent will be determined after Tuesday's volleyball matches; the football bi-district opponent is also yet to be determined. The UIL Regional Cross Country Meet will be held Monday and Tuesday in Huntsville. Way to go, Bulldogs!
- I want to offer a huge shout-out to Bulldogs running back Ricky Sandolph, who was nominated for last week's TexasBowl Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week presented by Kroger and Dave Campbell's Texas Football. His 276 yards and five rushing touchdowns against New Caney Porter was among the best offensive performances in Texas. Also, congratulations to Bulldogs Football Offensive Coordinator Keith Whitely, who was last week's (statewide) Offensive Coordinator of the Week, also an award from Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, after the team's 56-point performance in the Porter victory.
- Finally, when it comes to safely transporting more than 2,000 students to and from school every day, along with getting our student-athletes, band, cheer, JROTC and student trainers to their events in a safe and timely manner, we have our outstanding Transportation Team to thank. Last week was National School Bus Safety Week, which not only served as a reminder for everyone to do their part, but it also provided an opportunity to remind our school bus drivers how grateful we are for their service. Please join me in thanking our drivers for all that they do.
Have a great week!
Walter Jackson, Ed.D.

Heritage Elementary welcomes UK students as part of NASA partnership
Several high school age students teachers from the United Kingdom spent time at Heritage Elementary School this past week as part of the Aspirations Academies Trusts program, in partnership with NASA. The program offers students a chance to develop their interpersonal skills and discover the world of space travel. Additionally, they toured NASA and joined Heritage fifth graders for a model rocket launch.
Algebra Camp helps Lomax Jr. High students hone skills
Lomax Jr. High algebra students take the PSAT a week earlier than most students. So, what do they do when everyone else is testing? Algebra Camp. Conducted by instructional coach Faith Miller and teachers Laurie Burns, Anthony Ringer and Anthony Deardorff, more than 90 eighth grade algebra students worked their way through four activity stations to hone the skills they have been working on all year.
"These students are completing their first high school course for credit, so we are always looking for ways to creatively give them extra opportunities to be ahead of the curve," said Lomax Principal Dr. Kade Griffin. "This is just one example of how we are doing that."

Teacher Feature
Mr. Joseph Stewart, who is in his second year at La Porte ISD, splits his time between La Porte Jr. High and La Porte High School. During most of the regular school day he is a sixth grade DAEP teacher. Stewart is also the head coach of the La Porte High School Water Polo teams, which recently wrapped up the season in the UIL playoffs.
Celebrating our LP Heroes
A special congratulations to Ms. Judith Aguilar, one of our most dedicated, hard-working, and inspiring custodians! Though she is stationed at the district's Instructional Technology Center, Judith has helped at campuses and other La Porte ISD offices. She is an invaluable asset to her team who motivates others to strive for excellence in their own roles. We are extremely honored that Judith chooses to be a member of the La Porte ISD family.
We also extend congratulations to Ms. Diana Horelka, La Porte Elementary School counselor, for being selected for the LP Hero Award. She is incredibly supportive to all those around her, always being on the move, and making La Porte Elementary a happy place to be!
LP Heroes are nominated by their peers and are chosen monthly by our Human Resources Department. Honorees receive a $100 Amazon gift card from Gulf Coast Educators Federal Credit Union.
