Native American and Indigenous People's Month
American/American Indian Heritage Month celebrations began on Friday, November 1st in SPASD!! “National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in November. It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation.
Mock Election
On Monday, November 4th and Tuesday, November 5th SP West students will have the opportunity to participate in a mock election. The purpose of the election is an education opportunity for students as voters as well as students practicing being election workers. Students in AP Government and FAD have the opportunity to help work the election while every SP West student has the opportunity to vote. The mock election is about the process, not the result.
Find information on how you can vote in the 2024 fall election (if you are eligible) below:
Grades due Friday
Did you know that grades are posted 4 times a semester but not all grade postings are the same. Here's a breakdown:
- 4 Week Progress Report- A snapshot in time- does not directly affect GPA, transcript of athletics
- 9 Week Mid-Semester Summary- A snap shout in time that does not directly affect, GPA or transcript BUT DOES AFFECT ATHELTICS. Receiving 1 or more F (INCLUDING SP30) results in an immediate 15 school-day suspension from competition
- 13 Week Progress Report- A snapshot in time- does not directly affect GPA, transcript of athletics
- Semester Grades- USED TO CALCULATE GPA, GOES ON TRANSCRIPT, AFFECTS ATHLETICS
This Friday teachers have to turn in their grades by 9:00am (hard deadline for teachers) for the MID-SEMESTER SUMMARY. If there is a failing grade - including SP30- on Friday it will result in an automatic 15-school-day suspension from competing in athletics. Once the grades are posted you cannot turn in the work and have the grade changed.
Students- reminder that if you are turning in work after the deadline the teacher will grade it as soon as possible, but you are on their timeline at that point. Please ensure you are communicating early and often with teachers.

Bus Delays and Emergencies

Individual Sports
In our Individual Sports unit on Birdie Ball, students are developing a range of skills related to this golf-like activity. They are exploring proper etiquette, grip, stance, swing, follow-through, scoring, club selection, and different strokes. In the attached photo, you can see students practicing their chip shots.
Shelter Building in Adventure Education
Students are engaging in hands-on activity where they are learning to construct temporary shelters using natural materials. This unit focuses on outdoor survival skills, team building, problem solving while enjoying outdoor nature for the emotional and social benefits.
Foundations of PE
As you can see from the picture, our foundation classes are currently learning how to properly use the weightroom to improve their overall fitness. You may not be able to tell by the picture but the students were very excited to explore and learn in this space. A few students even said “I’m going to come here after school, this was a lot of fun.” This was a great break from the gym space where we just completed a variety of team sports games such as Sabakiball, Angleball and Tsegball. Our next unit starting 11/8 is Swimming.
Team Sports
Our Team sports classes finished up Sabakiball and Lacrosse the past few weeks. We are moving into Tsegball next week with our swim unit starting 12/20. It’s been great seeing the students engage in a variety of team sport activities, some of which are new to all of them.

Nutrition and Native American and Indigenous People's Month
November is National Native American and Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month! As we honor and celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of Native Americans and Indigenous Peoples, every Sun Prairie school will be providing a special meal to mark this important month. On the 22nd, lunch provided the following: Fish Sandwich, long grain and wild rice, roasted butternut squash, blueberries, and strawberries. The meal highlighted traditional flavors and ingredients cherished in Native American cuisine, most closely resembling the diets of Ojibew (Chippewa) Ho-Chunk Nation, and Menominee tribes.
