No School Tuesday, May 14th: Election Day
Dear Flower Valley Community,
I hope you all had a wonderful week. I was out of the building Monday and Tuesday enjoying some much needed time with my 3 year old grandson in Texas. It is amazing how much our little ones change in such a short period of time. It is always a good reminder to enjoy every moment we have with our families.
I wanted to give a shout-out to all of our parents who supported Career Day. It is truly special how unique the experiences are of the families in our community. Our children and staff learned so much from your presentations on Career Day. Thank you for taking time out of your busy days to share what you do with all of us.
A special thank you to our PTA and all of our families who made staff appreciation week so special. We are truly grateful for your support!
This upcoming week includes a couple of changes to the schedule. Tuesday is election day, and schools are closed. We also have Field Day for grades K-2 from 9-12:00PM Friday, May 17th. Thank you to all of you who have signed up to volunteer your time. I heard that there may be a splash tower this year...we'll see what fun lies ahead. :) Field Day for grades 3-5 is May 22nd.
To all of the moms out there, I hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day and are completely spoiled by your families.
I hope you all have a restful weekend!
With Firefly Pride!
Dr. Fish

Jewish American Heritage Month
National Jewish American Heritage Month is a time for all Americans to recognize and celebrate the contributions Jewish Americans have made to American history, culture, and society. The first Jewish American community with supporting institutions was established in Maryland in 1825. Jewish Americans have faced anti-Semitism through discrimination, hate speech, and hate acts from colonial times to the present, and Jewish American individuals and organizations work diligently to end anti-Semitism through advocacy and education in schools and society. Jewish Americans have made significant contributions to American culture in the fields of science, music, art, education, business, government, medicine, social justice, and numerous others. At Flower Valley, we plan on highlighting these achievements through our morning announcements.

Lunch and Recess Updates
**Please remember that cleats are not allowed at school, especially at recess.
As spring season enters, we find that students' behaviors escalate during lunch and recess. We want students to be able to enjoy some down time with their friends at lunch and recess, but we also need them to be safe and listen respectfully to the adults supporting lunch and recess. We have reiterated this important message to students through town halls, in their homeroom classes, and at lunch and recess, but we could use your support as well.
Below are a few updates from lunch and recess.
- Our 4th and 5th graders are now together again for recess. So far, things are going well. Soccer is also back, and students are doing much better at interacting respectfully and with good sportsmanship.
- Some of our younger students are struggling to listen respectfully during lunch. It is an exciting time, and we want students to be able to enjoy this time with their friends. We are, however, finding it challenging to get students to clean up after themselves and to quiet down when staff are talking to them about cleaning up and transitioning to recess.
- We have begun a rewards program to promote positive behaviors. Some of the rewards include the option for students to eat outside, the choice in their seating at lunch, or a fun treat at the end of the week.
- We have also recently started using our new technology in the All Purpose Room to play calming music and to show calming backgrounds. On Fridays, we are providing an incentive for students to watch MCPS approved short clips or movie excerpts on the Boxlight.

On June 12th at 5:30PM, our 5th graders will be celebrating their exit from Flower Valley Elementary School.
Please consider volunteering to help out at the 5th grade promotion ceremony. It is a FVES tradition that parents of younger students offer support at this event so that the 5th grade parents can enjoy this special moment with their child.
There are several 1.5 hour shifts available between 4-7pm. All help is appreciated! If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Taylor at JRT42209@gmail.com.

Supporting Our Community
Join us in celebrating the memory of our beloved former firefly, Madison Jane Smith, by taking part in a Lego drive. We're collecting NEW and UNOPENED Lego sets through May 31st to bring joy to young cancer patients at Children's National Hospital in Washington, D.C. These Legos will give them fun and distraction during their treatments. Let's come together to spread smiles and hope. Your contribution can truly make a difference. Thanks for your support!
