Finishing Strong & Getting a Great Start!
The cover picture shows Dixon High School Key Club volunteering with the Onslow County Christmas Cheer Program. Our DHS Key Club took their annual field trip to Onslow County Christmas Cheer today. These hard-working students kicked off Christmas break by helping almost 2,000 local children's Christmas wishes come true! Love, Serve and Care the Bulldog Way!
Upcoming State Exam Information
Students currently taking the following classes will take state exams during the week of January 14th through the 17th.
CTE State exams: Principles of Business Finance, Project Management, Health Science 1 Honors, Health Science I, Foundations of Health Science, Marine Occupations I & II, Foods I & II, Woodworking I, Principles of Family and Consumer Sciences
EOC State exams: Math I, Math III, Biology, English II
If a student has one of the above classes during 1st period, they will take their exam on 1/14/25. If they have one of the above classes during 2nd period, they will take their exam on 1/15/25. 3rd period exams will be given on 1/16/25, and 4th period exams on 1/17/25.
All other classes will give a teacher-made exam during the week of January 6th. Students with A averages will not need to take teacher-made exams. All state and teacher-made exams count as 25% of students' final grades.
Attendance WILL be taken during exam week (January 14th-17th). Students who come to school without an exam on these days will sit in the gymnasium and be counted present for that period (1st period on 1/14, 2nd period on 1/15, etc.)
Students who do not come to school on an exam day (whether they have an exam or not) will be counted absent for that period (1st period on 1/14, 2nd period on 1/15, etc.).
EOC State Exam Review Days
We want our Dixon Bulldogs to shine brightly on their state exams. Students taking Math 1, Math 3, English 2, and Biology EOC tests can attend EOC Boot Camp to strengthen their readiness. These sessions will be offered after school on Wednesday, Thursday, and Monday, form 2:30-4, and Saturday morning from 9-11:30. Passing the state test for tested subjects does demonstrate mastery of content in those subject areas. Please encourage your child to attend these sessions.
Attendance and Waiver Information
According to the Onslow County Board of Education Policy 4400, for a student to receive credit for a course, he/she must not be absent for more than ten (10) days per class period per semester. Accumulated absences over ten (10) days per class period per semester with extenuating circumstances must be documented by medical and/or legal paperwork and be submitted to the Principal or their designee. Students that have over 10 days of absences in any course will need to submit an Attendance Waiver Form by January 10th to Mrs. Hardy, in our Student Services Office. Waiver forms are available at the front desk and in our Student Services Office.
Important Information Regarding Attendance Waivers
Attendance waivers are only granted in EXTENUATING circumstances. Although an absence is excused, it may not qualify to be waived. Waivers are for students who have 11 or more absences and can provide the appropriate documentation.
Absences that may be waived (these are examples and not all inclusive):
Ø Death in the immediate family: Parent, Grandparents, Guardian, Sibling
Ø Hospitalization
Ø Court
Ø Other situations deemed to be truly extenuating by the Attendance Committee.
The following are absences that are excused absences but are not automatically waivable:
Ø Routine Doctor/Dental/Medical Appointments
Ø General Illness
An attendance waiver does not erase an absence from a student's record. The waiver prevents a student from failing the course if he/she has missed over 10 days. A waiver cannot exempt a student from taking exams. An attendance waiver in no way applies to a student's academic work. Please note that students are responsible for making up all academic work from any absence within the time limit set by the teacher. An attendance waiver will not override the student's academic grade. If a student has a failing grade in a class, they have failed the class regardless of their attendance.
Before the waiver is considered, Administration will look at the number of absences and tardies accumulated by the student in their current classes and review the student's previous attendance history.
Waivers will not be considered for the students with fewer than 10 absences. Waivers must have proper documentation attached.
