February Cornerstone: Teamwork
Engaging in meaningful dialogue is one of the most important elements of having an effective team. Too often, we either shy away from difficult conversations or plunge into them headfirst without taking the time to think about how to make that conversation effective.
One essential skill to have meaningful conversations is learning to separate facts from our stories. Whenever we feel strong emotions toward someone else, itโs because we have told ourselves a story about something that person has done. The stories we tell ourselves will either fuel positive or negative emotions about the person. But, the reality is that we can look at the exact same facts and tell ourselves radically different stories about those facts, just like how we can see two different faces in this image.
So, when we recognize that we have negative feelings toward someone else, our first step should be to separate the facts of their actions from the stories we have told ourselves about their behavior. Doing this will help us avoid downward spirals where we only see the actions of someone else through the lens of the stories we have told ourselves. These stories reinforce our negative emotions about them. As we learn to recognize our negative stories, we can stop our rush to judgment and move to curiosity by asking, โWhy would a reasonable, rational person do this?โ or in the words of Ted Lasso, "Be curious, not judgmental."
