Tumuaki Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
It is a busy time at Waikari School as we are in full swing with our rehearsals for our performance and the North Canterbury Kapa Haka Festival.
Performances provide a great opportunity for schools to integrate multiple curriculum areas into one cohesive learning experience. Currently, our performance is focusing on:
- The Arts Curriculum: Dance, Drama, Visual Arts, and Music
- English: Oral Language and Reading (specifically reading with expression)
- Social Sciences: Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum
It is amazing to see students' confidence grow as they push themselves outside of their comfort zones and support one another. Performing on stage can be daunting, and there are many conversations being had around the school about the importance of having a growth mindset and developing resilience.
By the end of the term, whānau will receive a draft Health Curriculum Delivery Statement brought home by your child. In accordance with the Education and Training Act, the Waikari School Board must consult with whānau about the delivery of our Health Curriculum. Alongside this statement, there will be a breakdown of the "Keeping Ourselves Safe" and "Relationships and Sexuality" units we will be teaching next term. Please note that we will hold a parent information evening about these units of work on Wednesday, 23rd October, at 1:30 PM. The Police Educator, Constable Ken, will be present to share aspects of the "Keeping Ourselves Safe" unit that he will be teaching.
Thank you for your continued support.
Noho ora mai,
Phoebe Todd

Storylines Authors Tour
On Friday Weka Class had the opportunity to go to the Storylines Tour at the Omihi Hall. Here they had the opportunity to listen to two authors share their stories, journeys and give some advice and feedback to future authors. The authors they heard from were:
- Alan Dingley
- Ned Barraud
- Lily Duval
It was very exciting to hear that Weka Class's favourite (naughty) book "Watch Out for the Weka" was written and illustrated by Ned Barraud, which is based on a story about his Grandfather. He's busy writing another book and we can't wait to hear what it is all about. Ned then look the students for an art lesson.
Daffodil Day
We celebrated Daffodil Day with bright yellow on Friday 30th September and managed to raise $114 for the Cancer Society. Thanks to everyone who donated. Our Student Leaders Lotti, Macy, Will, Shakaiyah and Tom organised some fun activities to help us celebrate the day.
- Icing Daffodil Cookies
- Woodwork
- Scavenger Hunt
- Sports
Sunflowers Preschool Visiting
We were really excited to have a visit from Sunflowers Preschool on Thursday 5th September. Sunflowers brought their 'almost 5 year old students' so that they could get a taste of school life. It was great having them visit and certainly provided plenty of entertainment. Miss Todd and Mrs Florance were so impressed by how Waikari School students were supporting, helping and playing with our visitors. It was great to see obstacle courses set up at lunchtime, magic potions created, hungry caterpillar learning and students helping our visitors play on the playground.
Fortnightly Maths Challenge
We heard lots of comments about last weeks fortnightly maths challenge and know that it created some enthusiastic conversations around the dining table. Special mention to Manaaki who's maths equations even challenged Miss Todd. We have kept it the same this week but changed the numbers - see how you go!
Kiwhaha o te wiki (Saying of the Week)
Next week is Māori Language Week, so here are some greetings that we challenge you to try and use throughout your week! Ka rawe! - Awesome.

PRIDE Fortnightly Focus - Integrity
This week, we discussed having a growth mindset and developing resilience especially as we gear up for our big performance.
Key points included:
- When performing, we should focus on what we can control (ourselves) and refrain from pointing out others' mistakes.
- If someone makes a mistake (or forgets some of their line) we have to move on and continue with the performance.
- If we make a mistake it is not a bad thing - mistakes are how we learn. We have to keep going and try again.
- Facing challenges is a positive sign—it means we are being pushed to grow, as our brains are like muscles that strengthen through effort.
The year 1s-6s watched another Mojo video once the Year 7-8s had gone to Technology, see it below.
