Warm and Waterproof Layers, Please!
As we move into colder weather please make sure your child is bringing appropriate layers to school. Outdoor recess happens rain or shine and ‘indoor recess’ is only called for on the rainiest of days.
The students need a waterproof coat and a hat. The hat can be a winter hat, waterproof hood, or baseball cap with a hood over it. We are trying to keep their bottom layer and heads dry. If they do not have waterproof layers or head covering they are sent to play under cover in front of the classroom. Gloves are a bonus!
Kindergarten - Ms. Caterina
It takes about two months for an early childhood class to form. Children learn to work, play, move in circle, sing, problem solve and be together. Many foundational skills are developed in kindergarten. The past two months we have wet felted pumpkins, sewn gnomes, carved pumpkins, made lanterns, and made pumpkin and gingerbread muffins. Currently we are making garlands and mittens out of wool sweater scraps. The children also wish to make leg warmers. If you happen to have any wool or cashmere sweaters that have holes, are old, or have shrunken, please consider donating them to us for our sewing projects. The children love to sew, which supports their fine motor skills, eye tracking development, focus, as well as confidence as they make items that they can play with or wear.
At the end of October, I hosted the school's first early childhood Harvest Festival. We dressed up as fairies, gnomes, animals and elemental beings and processed to our elemental kingdoms in Clay Street Park where we sang songs and gave offerings to Mother Earth, then gathered for a potluck in our kinderyard. This was a time to gather as a community to celebrate the Harvest, before we turned inward towards the darker days of late autumn and winter. It was a time to build connections as a community of families and teachers raising children in a holistic fashion that honors the Earth and all of her creatures. This year, Kettle and Crow as well as Little Gnomes Nature School joined us for the event. It was a delight to collaborate with a couple of local early childhood programs and create a new tradition that offers a beautiful acknowledgement of the season, and provides a sweet alternate to Halloween, which can be scary for young children.
Kind Regards,
Caterina Cegin, Kindergarten Teacher
