Riley Dance Marathon
The Dance Marathon is back this year! HPE Student Council is teaming up with FHS Student Council to host a dance marathon to support to the Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Students will learn a synchronized dance taught by the highschoolers, dance to music, play games, and have a popcorn snack. This event will take place on Friday, March 8, 2024 immediately afterschool until 4:15. We will begin parent pick up at that time. The cost to attend is $10 and this will cover the cost of snack and send a portion to the hospital. All next week we will host a spirit week (in conjunction with Read Across America week) to help fundraise for the children’s hospital. All extra monetary donations will go to the children’s hospital!
Permission slips will go home today! If you would like your child to attend, please sign the form and return with $10 by Thursday, March 7!!
ATTENDANCE
HPE Families,
I hope this message finds you well. As we continue the school year, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s education. Your involvement truly makes a difference in their success.
One area that I’d like to touch upon is the importance of regular school attendance. We all understand that life can sometimes present unexpected challenges and circumstances that disrupt our daily routines. However, consistent attendance is vital for your child’s academic progress and overall well-being. If your child isn’t feeling 100% and you’re unsure whether to send them to school or not, here is a resource to help guide your decision from the Indiana Department of Education.
Attending school regularly not only ensures that your child doesn’t miss out on valuable instruction but also helps them develop essential habits that are crucial for success in school and later in life. We understand that occasional absences may be unavoidable due to illness or family emergencies. In such cases, please remember to notify us as soon as possible.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out. Again, we thank you for your support.

Counselor's Corner
Hi HPE families!
Screen time management is important especially for our elementary students. While screens can offer educational benefits, excessive screen time may have negative effects on a child's development. Here are some guidelines and tips for parents:
1. **Set Limits:**
- Establish daily and weekly screen time limits for your child. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends no more than one hour of screen time per day for children aged 2 to 5 and consistent limits for children aged 6 and older.
2. **Create a Schedule:**
- Have a consistent daily schedule that includes designated times for homework, outdoor play, family meals, and screen time. This helps children understand when it's appropriate to use screens.
3. **Co-Viewing:**
- Whenever possible, watch or engage in activities with your child. This allows you to monitor the content and discuss it together.
4. **Educate on Online Safety:**
- Teach your child about online safety, including the importance of not sharing personal information, being cautious about strangers online, and understanding appropriate behavior.
5. **Screen-Free Zones:**
- Designate certain areas of your home as screen-free zones, such as bedrooms and dining areas. This helps create a distinction between screen time and other activities.
6. **Balance Activities:**
- Encourage a balance between screen time and other activities like reading, playing outside, and engaging in creative or physical play.
7. **Model Healthy Behavior:**
- Children often learn by example. Demonstrate healthy screen habits by managing your own screen time and engaging in non-screen activities.
8. **Use Parental Controls:**
- Implement parental controls on devices to restrict access to inappropriate content and set time limits. Many devices and apps have built-in features for this purpose.
9. **Monitor Content:**
- Regularly check the content your child is engaging with. This includes games, apps, websites, and TV shows. Ensure they are age-appropriate and align with your family values.
10. **Encourage Breaks:**
- Encourage your child to take breaks during screen time. Follow the 20-20-20 rule, where every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away to reduce eye strain.
Open communication and collaboration with your child are key to establishing healthy screen time habits!
Have a great weekend!

Recess Policy at HSE
Recess will be held outdoors whenever possible. Precipitation, sunshine, cloud cover, wind chill, temperature, etc. are all considered when a decision is made for indoor recess. In general, recess will be held indoors when it is raining, or the temperature/wind chill falls below 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Conversely, if 90 degrees Fahrenheit or higher heat index (relative humidity and temperature) is reached, the school will take special precautions for any outdoor activity and teachers will use extreme caution while monitoring students at recess. In addition, students will be provided ample amounts of water before and during recess; Recesses will be shortened or may be moved indoors at the discretion of the principal or designee; Children will be watched/monitored carefully for necessary action. These temperatures are based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The full recess policy can be accessed in the student handbook: https://resources.finalsite.net/images/v1691521899/hsek12inus/q7xtlrb1x9zozvwu9p61/ElementaryHandbook-APPROVED-23-24.pdf
