Our Busy Classrooms 👷🏻♂️
Pre-Kindergarten by Kathy Rodriguez
It’s hard to believe, but this year is almost over. Pre-K has learned lots of new things, practiced new skills, and made new friends. Pre-K is ready for kindergarten next year!
Pre-K will end the year learning about the world around them in our final theme, Earth, Moon, and Sky. We will focus on what we see in the sky, how we can describe the moon, and what astronauts do. During our literacy time, we will be learning the letters Ee and Xx. We will also blend onset and rime to form a familiar one syllable word, recognize and blend sounds into words, and segment a word into syllables. In writing, students will take part in shared and interactive writing experiences with their teachers. In math, we will count from 1 to 30, use language to describe concepts associated with the passing of time, and collect data and organize it in a graphic representation. In social studies, students will connect his or her life to events. In science, we will investigate, discuss, and describe sources of electricity, describe earth materials, and observe and identify objects in the sky.
We look forward to seeing all the growth our Pre-K students have made with skills they've learned this year.
Kindergarten by Hortensia Leon
As we head into May, our kindergarten classes are ready to dive into some exciting new learning! In math, we'll focus on teen numbers, counting by 10s, and counting all the way up to 100. In ELAR, we'll explore CVCC words and practice writing our own narratives. We'll also enjoy reading "The Food Group" books, where we'll learn about who, what, where, when, and why. In science, we'll wrap up our review of everything we've learned this year, and in social studies, we'll revisit and discuss all the amazing things we've discovered. It’s going to be a month full of fun and growth!
1st Grade by Jordan McGarvey
2nd Grade by Holly Hand
After a great field trip to Western Belle Farm, we are counting down the days ready to be out for the summer break!
In math, second graders will finish their units on time, shapes, and fractions as equal parts of shapes. In science, they will also finish up units on animal growth, behavior, and survival and then begin looking at unique life cycles. In reading and language arts, we will complete two read alouds, Snot Stew by Bill Wallace and Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary. We will use these stories to practice answering questions with short constructed responses and sharpen our writing skills. For social studies, we will study inventors of the past and begin a unit on financial literacy focusing on producers and consumers.
Reminders:
Lots of things will be going on around campus in the month of May so please continue to check your child’s folder for notes and fliers. The second grade team is looking forward to finishing this school year strong! Thank you for your continued support of your child’s education.
3rd Grade by Amber Lopez
In mathematics, get ready for a thrilling grand finale! As the curtain rises on May, we're absolutely buzzing with excitement here in third grade as we enter the final act of the 2024-2025 school year! We'll be embarking on an engaging journey, strategically reviewing key concepts to ensure a confident and seamless transition to the wonders of fourth grade. Think of it as our mathematical mastery mission! Meanwhile, our science explorations will involve a dynamic vocabulary review, revisiting the fascinating terminology from all our units. And of course, because learning should be an adventure, we'll be weaving in plenty of delightful and engaging activities throughout the month. May is shaping up to be an absolute blast, and we can't wait to make these final weeks truly memorable!

We are continuing to Choose Love at HES! The Choose Love for Schools Program emphasizes the simple, universal teachings of courage, gratitude, forgiveness, and compassion in action. During the month of April, students continued to focus on the character value of Compassion in Action in our Choose Love enrichment classes as well as in our daily Choose Love time each morning in the classroom. Students learned that compassion in action means showing kindness to help someone solve a problem or feel better. They also continued to practice their “Compassion Breaths” to help them show compassion to others. During the month of May, we will review the Choose Love Formula of Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action = Choosing Love. Students will practice using the formula daily to thoughtfully respond and make positive choices as they interact with others.
Congratulations to the following students who were chosen as Choose Love Champions by their teachers! We are so proud of you! These students will represent HES by delivering donations to Hill County Paw Pals as part of our “Compassion in Action” community service project in May.

It is hard to believe that the school year is almost over! I have loved seeing our students eager to check out new books each week. All good things must come to an end, though, and all library books will be turned in by May 9th so we can do end of year tasks. Please make every effort to find any lost or overdue library books.
