Winter Events and Celebrations in Rebel Country
January News
Welcome to the January newsletter! As we approach the start of Semester 2 next Tuesday, it's the perfect time for students to refocus and set new goals for success. The beginning of a new semester offers a fresh opportunity to build on the lessons learned so far and take on new challenges with renewed energy. We encourage all students to take this time to evaluate their progress, stay organized, and put forth their best effort in the upcoming months.
This week marks a crucial time for high school students in grades 9 through 12 as they prepare for finals, scheduled for Thursday and Friday. With the Final Exam Schedule in place, students will have the chance to demonstrate everything they've learned over the semester. Grades 7 and 8 will follow the same schedule on Thursday and Friday; but will not have final exams. Finals for grades 9 through 12 are an important milestone, not just for grades, but for reinforcing the hard work that has gone into each subject. We wish all of our students the best of luck and encourage them to approach these exams with confidence and determination.
The semester will conclude with a well-deserved break on Monday, January 20, as we observe a teacher workday. This day provides our educators with valuable time for planning and reflection as they continue to support our students’ academic journeys. A special thank you to our parents for their unwavering support, encouragement, and role as cheerleaders for their children. Your involvement and dedication make all the difference in helping our students succeed and thrive in the school community.
With Gratitude,

Mrs. Feist's Baking Class
In Mrs. Feist's high school baking class, students are learning a wide range of valuable skills that go beyond just following recipes. They are gaining hands-on experience in baking techniques such as measuring ingredients accurately, mastering proper mixing methods, and understanding the science behind leavening and temperature control. Throughout the course, Mrs. Feist emphasizes teamwork, time management, and attention to detail, helping students develop both practical skills and a deeper appreciation for the culinary arts. Whether preparing simple treats or more advanced creations, students leave the class with a strong foundation in baking and the confidence to try new recipes at home.

Mr. Huiras' Social Studies Class
In Mr. Huiras' class, students explored the medieval feudal system, learning about the roles of kings, knights, and peasants and how this system provided protection and land in exchange for service. The class delved into the structure of feudalism, where kings granted land to nobles and knights in return for military service and loyalty, while peasants worked the land in exchange for protection and a place to live. By examining the relationships and responsibilities within this hierarchical system, students gained a deeper understanding of how feudalism shaped medieval society and ensured stability during a time when warfare and instability were common. Through discussions and activities, students also reflected on how these roles influenced the lives of individuals in the Middle Ages, offering insights into the social and economic dynamics of the time.

USC VEX Champions
Congratulations to the MSU VEX Champions Brody, Brody, Jada, and Noah. USC VEX robotics teams competed on December 20th at the MSU VEX Robotics Tournament.
VEX competitions challenge teams of elementary, middle, and high school students to showcase their skills in programming, driving, and controlling robots. The VEX Robotics Design System provides an engaging platform for students to explore a wide range of career fields within science, technology, engineering, art, math, and robotics (STEAMR). VEX Robotics fosters an explorative approach to STEAM learning, encouraging students to discover the fun and satisfaction of solving complex problems. These tools are designed to be accessible to beginners while offering endless possibilities for growth as students’ skills and creativity develop.
Open to students of all backgrounds and abilities, the VEX Robotics program is one of the fastest-growing extracurricular activities in middle and high schools. Beyond mastering technical skills, participating in VEX Robotics encourages valuable soft skills like teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving, all of which are essential for future success in any field.
Holiday Dress Up Days
Students at USC got into the holiday spirit during Holiday Week, dressing up for a variety of fun and festive themed days. They kicked off the week with Cozy and Comfy Pajama Day, lounging in their favorite sleepwear, followed by Ugly Sweater Day, where everyone showed off their most amusing and creative holiday sweaters. On Wednesday, it was Whiteout Day, with students sporting all-white outfits in a wintery celebration of the season. Thursday brought Santa vs. Grinch Day, where students embraced the playful rivalry between the two iconic holiday characters. The week wrapped up with Holiday Day, where everyone wore their best holiday-themed attire to cap off a week filled with school spirit and festive fun.

As part of their fitness curriculum, students are learning the fundamentals of the sport, including proper racket technique, footwork, and teamwork. Badminton is a fast-paced game that challenges both agility and strategy, allowing students to engage in friendly competition while improving their coordination and reflexes. Whether playing singles or doubles, the 10th graders are gaining valuable skills in sportsmanship and collaboration, all while staying active and having a great time with their peers.
Dorian Festival
USC students participated in the Dorian Vocal Festival at Luther College on January 12th and 13th. This two day event was open to juniors and seniors that have been nominated by their school directors. While on campus, students had the opportunity to sing in a 950 person choir, to rehearse with Luther’s music faculty, and to participate in sectionals with singers from hundreds of schools around the midwest. Students experienced the vibrant community of Luther College by eating meals in the cafeteria, spending time in different areas of campus, interacting with current Luther music students, having lessons in Jenson-Noble Hall of Music, and performing in the beautiful Center for Faith and Life.
Big/Little Rebel Holiday Party
The USC Big Rebels (7th-12th grade mentors) celebrated the holiday season with their Little Rebels from the elementary school during a festive Holiday Party before Winter Break. The event was filled with holiday cheer as the students enjoyed snacks, made holiday crafts, and listened to seasonal music while spending quality time together. It was a wonderful opportunity for the Big Rebels to connect with their Little Rebels and spread some festive spirit before the break.
