Have you applied/reapplied for Free and Reduced Priced Meals?
Free or reduced-price meals are available to students based on household size and income. If income falls below the amount listed below for household size, then students living within the household may qualify for free or reduced-price meals. Students are automatically eligible for free meals if the family receives assistance under the Food Supplement Program or Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) benefits.
Changes and/or status changes occur every year. This year there will be a price category change as of October 11, 2023. Please be sure to apply or reapply in the event your price category is affected by this change.

Attendance
Please note we have implemented a Google form for submission of absences/late arrivals and notes. This form is the only acceptable method of communication and must be utilized for reporting absences/late arrivals and uploading doctor/medical notes ONLY for your student(s). With the exception of COVID reporting in which an email in addition to the absence form must be sent to Nurse Ann, Dr. Fryson and Mrs. Virgil.

ABSENT NOTE SUBMISSION: Please complete this form within three (3) days once your child returns to instruction. Excused absences cannot be placed into SchoolMax until AFTER the child returns to instruction. Family vacations and trips are not considered excused absences. Refer to the Student Rights and Responsibilities Handbook for further clarification regarding excused and unexcused absences.

Nurse Updates
Nurse Ann and the School Health Services strongly recommend wearing a mask and keeping one available in your child's backpack.
Please help yourself and others -- keep your scholars home when they are not well.
Immunizations
Immunizations must be up-to-date and received by the school nurse to prevent exclusion from school.
Medication forms are attached. Please hand carry newly prescribed medication in the pharmacy packaging. Any adult may deliver the medication to the nurse. (appointments must be made)

Kindergarten
Kind Kindergarten News!
In Reading, we will begin the Historical Fiction Nora's Ark. This week students will work on Schwa Vowel Sounds.
In Social Studies, students will begin Chapter 6: Lesson 4 New Ideas. Students will learn about new ideas and machines and how they changed peoples lives throughout history.
In Math, scholars are finishing up our unit on time, volume, and mass. Expect a test sometime in the middle of next week! Then we'll be working on calculating perimeter.
In Science, we are on to our last section of the unit, focusing on how organisms adapt to changes in their environment.

Spectacular Second Grade News!
Next week in ELA, we will begin Unit 5, Our Incredible Earth. Our spelling pattern for the week is le, sion, and tion words. In Math, we will take continue topic 15, Graphs and Data. In Science, we will continue topic 6, Habitats. In Social Studies, we will continue Chapter 6, Our American Culture. As always, please ensure your scholar reads every night.
Please reinforce the importance of following our School Motto with your scholars. I will Respect Myself and Others, I will Opt to Be Scholarly, I will Act Responsibly, and I will React with Kindness.
Testing season is approaching, marking the final stretch of the school year. We kindly request that you ensure your scholar arrives at school punctually and is present unless they are sick.

Kings Dominion
Kings Dominion is coming up shortly. Permissions slips have been submitted to Ms. Carter and payments are to be received through MySchoolBucks if you haven't done so already. We will explore this trip on May 17, 2024 at 8:00 am. Please be on time when arriving to school. We will leave promptly at 8:00 and return by approximately 6:00 pm. Camp Schmidt
Camp Schmidt will be May 28-29. The permission slips have been distributed and you will receive an invite to join an informational Zoom meeting. The date for this informational is Wednesday, May 15th at 6:30-7:30 pm. You will receive a list of the necessities that your scholar will need to be successful on the trip. Please adhere to the list and ensure your scholar is prepared. Thank you so much for your support! We also need donations! Donations for the trip is vital for the success of the trip. Science
Students will continue to recognize that many stars are as big as the sun, they will explain how the apparent brightness of stars is related to their distances from Earth.

K-2 students practiced
Keyboarding: Cursor, Spacebar, Backspace, Enter, and Words
Learners receive direct instruction and practice keyboarding to type words as they use the cursor, type letter combinations to form words, the spacebar to add spaces between words, the backspace key to delete mistakes, and the enter or return key to create new lines in this engaging and interactive digital lesson.
3-5 students practiced
Presentations: Audience and Organization
In this engaging and interactive digital lesson, learners receive direct instruction and practice organizing and developing a slide show using presentation software. They learn how to consider the audience and the purpose of the slide show to tell stories, present information, and share ideas.
PE
Good week, this week we are practicing our basketball dribbling skills, so please make sure your scholar has proper athletic shoes, and water as the weather is getting warmer.

STEM I LEGO
This week, students will make adjustments and modifications to last week's creations to improve their designs.
STEM II
Greetings,
K-2 will be learning about the life cycle of the butterfly. Their STEM challenge will be to create a butterfly that can stay on their finger like the Monarch butterfly in the book Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly.
3rd grade will continue our lessons on coding. This week our lesson was on sequencing, Their challenge was to develop a coding sequence to get Ms. Carter out of the door of the classroom. It was more challenging than they thought but they had a lot of fun doing it!
4th grade is continuing their lesson on sending messages. Their challenge is to get a message to another group across the room without using light or sound and without disturbing or alerting the other groups.
5th grade is continuing our lesson on the solar system. This week we did some research on the different planets using a really cool resource where they could manipulate the objects in our solar system to see different aspects of them.
