Literacy

It may seem odd, but in Montessori education, kids start out by learning letter sounds rather than letter names. When introducing the letter B, for example, the teacher would call it "buh." The reason for this is that when learning to make sense of letters, we need to know what sound the letter makes, not its name. This picture shows a sorting activity for grouping small objects based on their beginning sounds and is good to use once the child already associates the "buh" sound with the letter. If you have a young child, you can try this at home.

Numeracy

Similarly, the math materials help students go from the concrete form to abstract thought. This picture from a recent Montessori conference shows the array of math materials laid out to create a sequential path from basic quantity through division. Each work in the process builds on the child's prior mastery and teaches one new skill.

Peace

Peace education is an important part of the Montessori Method. Grace and Courtesy lessons give children tools for resolving conflicts peacefully and ways to cultivate a peaceful and productive environment for learning.

Joining the Flint Montessori Program

The initial application window for the Early 5/K-3 program for the fall has closed. If you have not applied yet, you can still do so and the application will be considered after those that were submitted by the May 15 date. If you applied and are waiting to hear back, you can expect to be notified by June 15.


If you have a student who will be 4 years old by September 1 and you are interested in the Montessori pre-K program, you can pre-register by calling 591-KIDS or going online to Michigan Preschool | Home. Be sure to select Flint Community Schools- DTM Montessori as your preferred option. Once you have done that, please call the Flint Community Schools early childhood office at (810) 767-8018. (The pre-K application process has multiple steps, and doing both of these things helps ensure a smoother path.)

Help Us Re-Stock the Pre-K Room!

Please help us as we continue to work on refreshing our practical life activities in the pre-k classroom! Everyday objects from around your house may be exactly what we're seeking. Things we still need include: various locks with keys, silver or wood objects for polishing, a flashlight to take apart and assemble, old boots to scrub, eye droppers, and basters. June Montessori for Flint Advisory

Advisory meetings are held the third Friday of each month at 4:00 pm in the Durant Tuuri Mott library (1518 University Ave). Please mark your calendar and plan to join us for the next Advisory Meeting. This is the best way to get information, share ideas, help shape the future of Montessori for Flint and ensure sustainability of this high-quality programming for our children and our community.

Substitute Teaching Opportunity

Montessori for Flint is seeking individuals who are interested in being available as a substitute teacher for the Montessori classrooms. Having at least 90 hours of college credit is required, and knowledge of Montessori philosophy is preferred. To register, visit PESG (the company that coordinates substitutes for Flint Community Schools at www.mypesg.com. If you or someone you know is potentially interested please register as soon as possible. If there are potential substitutes who could be a good fit for the Montessori program but don’t yet have Montessori training, there are possibilities. Event Information

Community Extravaganza

A community extravaganza will be held on June 16 from 11:00 to 3:00 at Northwestern. There will be food, kids' activities, and workshops for parents. (The event is organized in zones so parents and children will be near each other.) Montessori for Flint will staff an information table. Please share the information with families who might like to attend.
