Celebrating HSD Educational Support Professionals: March 4-8, 2024
Also known as Classified Appreciation Week, this annual event is an opportunity to recognize the contributions of education support professionals in our public schools. While their area of service varies from custodial to secretarial to paraprofessional to much more, these employees perform critical job responsibilities that ensure school safety and support student learning and school operations. Each school will celebrate our educational support professionals at the building level and the HSD will also profile one team member every day on social media throughout the week. Oh...and the group will be treated to piece of cake on Friday! Please join us in thanking our awesome classified employees.

HSD Wraps Up National CTE Month
Every February, educators celebrate Career and Technical Education (CTE) to raise awareness of the role that CTE has in preparing learners for college and career success. CTE Month is also a time to recognize and celebrate local CTE programs such as HHS’ work-based learning, wood tech, and entrepreneurship programs and achievements like HHS senior Charlie Varney (pictured), who placed 1st in a recent regional SkillsUSA Competition: Job Interviewing. Way to go, CTE!
HHS' Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competed in the Winter Regional Leadership Conferences earlier this month, and we could not be more proud. Four students won first place titles across a multitude of categories, 16 students will be going to the state-wide competition in April, and all HHS presentation events qualified to be shown at State as well. Fantastic work, FBLA!
HSD Students Participate in Prestigious Regional, State-Wide Performances
Directors from 7 districts chose 15 students to perform in the North County Honor Band hosted at HHS. Students rehearsed intensively leading up to their evening performance. Connor Foster and Jameson Fyfe were selected for the Jr. All-State Baker and Rainier Honor Bands, and Brenden Weber was chosen for the Jr. All-State Jazz Band. Four HSD students showcased their talents at the LCRMEA Middle School Honor Band in January along with students from 8 other school districts. We are very proud of what our HHS and HMS Bands have accomplished!

Hockinson Helpers is Here and We're Looking for Help with HHES After-School Clubs
Excellent public schools don’t just happen; they require a team effort. Hockinson Helpers is a place to find opportunities to pitch in for Hockinson’s students. Hockinson Helpers helps to lift HSD students to new heights by linking community expertise to HSD needs in a collaborative and financially responsible way.
Currently, our elementary school is looking to offer free after-school opportunities for students 1-2 days a week from 2:30-3:30 pm for 4-6 consecutive weeks. HHES students can participate in a parent-led LEGO Club and teacher-led Robotics Club this spring. Do you have an interest (arts & crafts, needlework, sports, nature topics...) that you are willing to share with our students? If so, please contact Michael Olson, HHES Associate Principal at michael.olson@hocksd.org.
Thank you, Hockinson community, for helping us create exciting educational experiences for our kids and maintain high quality school facilities for everyone.
Hockinson, You're Invited: First HCE Silver Social Kicks Off Next Tuesday!
Hockinson Silver Socials is a new program series hosted by HSD Community Education. We’re bringing Hockinson adults together for exciting guest speaker events and other programs to build community for adults of all ages. This is a free opportunity for Hockinson neighbors to gather, enjoy light refreshments, and connect around common interests like music, exercise, reading, history, and more!
For our first Hockinson Silver Socials event, we’re hosting a special talk by Louise Tucker, author of Battle Ground…In and Around and Battle Ground Lake Before it Became a State Park on Tuesday, March 5 at 11 am - 1 pm. Join us at the Hockinson Community Education Center to learn about the 20th Century history of Battle Ground Lake and the making of her book. Interested in joining us? Please RSVP at (360) 448-6480 or via email at katie.omalley-soot@hocksd.org.
The HSD and Hockinson Community ED are very excited to offer this unique opportunity for residents to gather and socialize. A few different naming ideas were considered for this series and we ultimately landed on Hockinson Silver Socials. There was some concern that this name might give the impression that these events are for retirees only, but this is not the case! Hockinson Silver Socials events are open to adults of all ages.
Katie O’Malley Soot, Hockinson Community Education/Facility Use Coordinator, envisions more Hockinson Silver Social offerings throughout the year. Stay tuned for additional HSS events in the near future!
Winter Sport Athletes Compete at State, HHES Spring Sports Begin
Congratulations to:
- HHS Senior Gymnast Celia Racanelli
- State Swimmers: Ben Maitland (100 free), Ryder Hough (500 free), 200 4x50 Relay Teams-Dilan Andersen, Jaden Atchley, Ryder Hough, Ben Maitland and Even Bergstrom, Nate Nielsen, Adam Wendler, and Jack Smith
- State Wrestlers: Jake McKee (pictured), Liam McKee, and Austin Wallace
All of these student athletes represented HHS at their respective state tournaments the past two weekends. Celia’s route to State was a little unconventional. HHS does not offer Gymnastics so it entered into a cooperative agreement with Prairie High School last year. Racanelli made the most of this opportunity: She was crowned the 2A/3A Gymnastics All-Around Champion at the district gymnastics meet. Read more about her accomplishment here.
The first practices for HHS’s Spring Sports - Baseball, Softball, Girls Golf, Girls Tennis, Boys Soccer, and Boys and Girls Track - were held Monday. While the temperatures were more fitting for Winter Sports, we are confident the sun will come out March-May so our student-athletes can fully spring into outdoor sports. You can find the link to our HHS Spring Sports schedules in "Upcoming Events" below or on the HHS and HSD websites.
8th Graders Get Glimpse of High School Life, Plan for Future
This past Tuesday, Hockinson High School welcomed next year’s freshman class and their families for the annual Rising 8th Grader Night. Students explored the wide range of clubs, activities, and electives that Hockinson High School has to offer. Families also learned about core course pathways and get a head start on planning the high school journey ahead of them. We asked Catelyn and Kendall, junior and sophomore at Hockinson High School, about their advice for incoming freshmen:
Advice from Current HHS Students
Do you have any advice for incoming 9th graders new to HMS?
- “Don't get embarrassed about silly things and be respectful of others.” ~ Catelyn, junior at HHS.
- “Stay on top of your work and don't get behind.” ~ Kendall, sophomore at HHS
Make sure you try out...
- “Art Exploration with Mrs. Allyn and ASB with Mrs. Pershall.” ~ Catelyn, junior at HHS.
- “Spanish with Mr. Collingwood.” ~ Kendall, sophomore at HHS

News Bites
Jazzercise Generosity: It’s a Valentine's tradition: The Hockinson Jazzercise community has again made a donation to our district’s Dave Olson Fund to support students in need. Sue Thompson, a retired HSD counselor, spearheads the annual “Heart for Kids” campaign and this year the group donated $615. This donation will go a long way in breaking down barriers (food, school supplies, fees) for our students so they can learn at high levels and fully participate in school and extracurricular activities.
- HHES teacher uses thematic units to structure engaging lessons about penguins. “I learned that penguins hold their babies between their feet to keep them warm,” said Lyra, first grade student. Read more on our website, linked here!
- Catch up on HSD’s Nutrition News: Chartwells’ February Dining Newsletter is available here. Articles include: Encouragement on being heart-healthy, school meal news, and February “Cheers” recipient Christy Jardin, and more!
- Reminder! School's in Session on Fri. 3/15: We just wanted to make sure all HSD families remembered that HSD Schools are open on Friday, March 15. The day originally appeared as a student non-attendance day on the 2023-24 HSD Calendar, but was also designated as a snow make-up day. Due to school cancellations in January, our district calendar was revised, making the entire month of March all 5-day school weeks.
- HHS Launches Newspaper Club: This update is hot off the presses. As of last Friday, HHS has a newspaper club. The club was initiated by freshman Abigail Stella. The club advisor is HHS English teacher and graduate, Lauren Broer. It is exciting that, although HHS does not offer a journalism course, it is able to create an educational experience in news writing for interested students.
