Message From Principal Kinney
Good Afternoon,
Good afternoon! I hope you had a wonderful vacation. As always, I'm keeping a running log of school and grade events below, so you can stay up-to-date with everything that's going on. I'll keep updating this list as new events are planned. At Fowler, we're continuing our work to educate our students about the Holocaust and the importance of being kind and accepting. I'm thrilled to announce that on May 30th, we'll be hosting Ms. Doris Edwards, a Holocaust survivor, who will share her story with our students. Her personal account will be a humbling and powerful reminder of what human beings faced during that time.
Biography
Doris “Omi” Edwards is a Holocaust survivor by way of the Kindertransport. Doris was born in Limburg, Germany in 1929. As the Nazi party rose to power throughout the 1930’s in Germany, Doris and her family were faced with increasing discrimination and anti-semitism. The night of Kristallnacht (November 1938) was the turning point for Doris’ parents to make the decision that the family needed to leave Germany.
Following Kristallnacht, Doris’ parents moved to England to work as a maid and a butler. They arranged for Doris and her brother to be part of the Kindertransport. Their first part of their journey was moving to Amsterdam, Holland. Doris and her brother lived in Holland for 2 years before the family’s quota number was called and they were allowed to immigrate to the United States.
Doris was the youngest of the Jewish children in her group at 11 years old on the journey from Amsterdam to leave Europe. They rode the train from Amsterdam to Berlin, Germany. After two months of waiting for the right paperwork, Doris and the other children boarded the train and traveled through war-stricken Germany, occupied France, post-Civil War Spain, eventually disembarking in Lisbon, Portugal. Doris and her brother then boarded a ship for the long trip across the Atlantic Ocean to New York City. Due to a fortuitous telegram sent by my grandmother from Lisbon, her parents met them on the day of their arrival in New York.
Doris spent her teenage years living in New York City and eventually moving to Sharon, Massachusetts. Doris is now a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Doris routinely celebrates the Jewish holidays with her family. No matter the holiday, Doris will always light a yahrzeit light candle for the family members who did not survive the Holocaust.
Have a great weekend!
Keith

Update from the Fowler Counseling Department
We're excited to announce the launch of a brand new resource library within the Fowler School Counseling Department! This valuable addition to our support system was made possible by a generous grant from the Maynard Education Foundation (MEF).
The library will provide counselors, teachers, and student support staff with a wide range of books and access to an online journal subscription on topics related to social-emotional learning (SEL), academic success, and personal growth. These resources cater to different learning styles and offer valuable guidance for navigating challenges and fostering personal growth. The Fowler School Counselors are excited to start utilizing these resources with students, both inside and outside of the classroom.
This initiative aligns well with our commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment where every Fowler School student can thrive. We believe the new resource library will empower educators with tools to help students to develop essential life skills and reach their full potential.
This program was made possible by funding from Maynard Education Foundation.
Thank you, MEF, for your continued support!"
