FINAL EXAMS & SHIFT IN PORTFOLIO DEFENSE PROCESS THIS SEMESTER
For nearly all part-time Compass students, Wednesday will be their day for final exams, so they will take their AM bus to East or North, take their final exams, and either provide their own transportation home after their 2nd period exam or wait in the Commons at East or North (or other designated area) until the end of the day at 12:50, taking the bus home at 1:10.
As returning students know, Compass typically conducts portfolio defense sessions during the final exam days at the end of each semester. However, because we are changing this process in order to make it more meaningful for students, we will not have a portfolio defense at the end of the first semester this year. When we make the shift to our new process next semester, students will add artifacts to their portfolio during each quarter and will engage in a presentation of learning in May.
For this reason, we have decided as a staff to implement an opportunity for additional academic support and incentive for students this semester. Students who have met competency in all Quarter 1 and 2 classes by noon on December 18th will be exempt from the additional academic support sessions that are scheduled for December 19th and 20th. Students who are exempt from the additional academic support sessions will receive an email, which will be sent both to the student and their parents, notifying them of this status by the end of the day on Wednesday, December 18th. To be clear, every student who has a grade of Approaching Competency in one class or more will be required to attend school from 9:15-2:10 on both days, 12/19 and 12/20, to receive additional academic support in order to meet competency and earn credit by the end of the first semester.
At Compass Academy, we continually make adjustments based on students' needs in order to help every student be successful. It is our hope that this plan will fulfill that goal.

THIS WEEK'S GLIMPSE AROUND CAMPUS
For their final project in Applied Geography (Geography Games), students designed an original board game that relates to geographical concepts, complete with a rule book for the game and an explanation of how the game demonstrates the geographic concepts they chose to use. Khai, a freshman in the class, created a game called Land Lock, which shows human/environment interaction and for which he created a game board and 3D printed game pieces. In the game, players try to grow their populations by moving across, using, and changing tiles representing different terrains while also competing for resources.
