Staff Assignment Updates
A few secretary positions have shifted, internally, to better meet the needs of the school.
- Attendance Office: Mr. Santiago will be responsible for Drama/Tech & Fine Arts studios, taking over for Ms. Delesline.
- Principal's Office: Ms. Delesline will be taking over the roll of Principal's Secretary.
- Guidance/Records: Ms. Estrada will provide support to Ms. Williams, Assistant Principal, Guidance, and the team, especially in the area of records & official transcripts, diplomas, etc.
The Keeper of Official Records is the Attendance Office
When official records need changing, the Attendance Office is here to assist you. This includes updating addresses or having any type of court order on file. (As a reminder, YOU can update your own home, cell, and work phone numbers and email address of yourself or other additional adults on your child’s record in your NYC Schools Account, using the Emergency Contact page, in NYCSA.)
Finals: Why does only Math appear on the calendar?
Departments wanting to give final exams use their regular testing day, including Math. Math shows up on the calendar to dissuade other teachers from scheduling an event that would conflict with the Math final.
Clubs being Cancelled?
Our clubs do not meet on days when we have staff meetings (twice a month,) or on the day before a holiday, three day weekend, or vacation. Every so often (about twice a year,) we do not have clubs meet on the day of our Fall and Spring Open House. Clubs also do not meet on days where classes are not in session, e.g. Regents Weeks, Election Day. We hope this does not cause consternation as these are scheduled days and not last minute cancellations.
Menstrual Products Available in Girls Restrooms
Per State and local law (Open external link), the DOE is required to provide free menstrual products for students in grades 6–12. Please notify an adult in the building (who will notify their supervisor or the custodian) when items need replenishing.
Pre-Civil War Reformers
This week, Mr. Schmidt had his APUSH (Advance Placement, United States History) students bring in their projects on Pre-Civil War Reformers, where they presented them to their peers. They followed a speed dating-type protocol. Students rotated chairs every few minutes and made their presentations multiple time. The APUSH did an amazing job.
How well do you know your Pre-Civil War Reformers? Here are a few of the people covered:
- Frederick Douglass. Freed slave who was a leader in the abolitionist movement.
- William Lloyd Garrison. Radical abolitionist; published "The Liberator," a newspaper advocating for immediate emancipation.
- Horace Mann. A key reformer for education who became the Secretary of Board of Education in MA. He fought for higher teacher pay; better qualification standards for teachers; new buildings; and improved curriculum.
- Dorothea Dix. A reformer who campaigned for improved conditions for the mentally ill, leading to the establishment of mental asylums.
- Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Feminists and women's rights advocate; organized Seneca Falls Convention.
- Sojourner Truth. An escaped slave who became a prominent American abolitionist and women's rights advocate.
Non-APUSH Fun Fact:
The Women's Rights Pioneers Monument is the first monument in Central Park to honor real-life women. This 14-foot-tall bronze statue depicts three pivotal women’s rights advocates: Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth. (Location: MAP | Mid-Park at 68th Street). LaGuardia students helped raise fund for the statue, which was unveiled in 2020.
From the Desk of Jerrianna Phenix, Parent Coordinator
Dear LaGuardia Parents,
Certainly, we can all agree; it takes a tremendous amount of trust for parents to send their children into any school. As Chancellors Ramos emphasizes, the key to students flourishing in our programs is all about building strong relationships with families. The data is clear that our kids thrive when parent involvement is consistently high. Therefore, just like in any other effective relationship, it is impossible to create and accomplish this monumental task without clear communication. In fact, never in my 2-year tenure have I felt a greater need to bring each of our parent partners newsworthy information. And in my post as parent coordinator, I will keep at it.
Last, I hope you all can join me next month as I will be welcoming the next speaker in our Coffee & Donuts series: the new AP of Math and Science, Ms. Patricia Bechard.
As always, thank you for your continued collaboration and spirited discussions. I feel privileged to work with all of you as we strive to move the needle forward positively, every day. If something is pressing, please reach out to me via email or direct cell, (914-372-6360). In the meantime, I will continue to keep my promise of providing all families with accurate and timely information.
Warmest regards,
JA
Coffee & Donuts with our Parent Coordinator
The new Assistant Principal of Math and Science, Ms. Patricia Bechard will be joining me on Friday, January 3, between 9:00am and 10:30am, for another round of Coffee & Donuts. Our conversation will focus on the mission and vision of the department and learn the next steps planned for semester 2. If you are able to join us, please reply to this email no later than Thursday, January 2, by 12 noon. Upon entering the building, you will be directed to the mezzanine.
If coming to campus is not possible, every effort is made to place meeting recordings on the website.
As always, looking forward to continuing our conversation,
Jerrianna

PFLAG NYC Office – 154 Christopher St, 2A
PFLAG NYC is proud to partner with Advocates for Trans* Law Students (ATLS) to help parents learn more about and file name and/or gender marker change petitions in New York State. ATLS is the nation's first transgender law student advocacy group, aiming to provide support, community, and advocacy for TNBGNC students at Fordham Law School.
At this event, Fordham law students will be available to help people self-file their or their child's name and/or gender marker change petitions. ATLS will provide the form, a notary, and instructions for what to bring to court. While no legal advice will be given or legal representation provided, the law students will provide help and answer questions!
We will also have copies of and information on NYC Public School Name and Gender Change Request forms, which allow students to change their name and/or gender on permanent school records without legal documentation.
