A Message from the Principal
Hello Elk Neck Elementary Families,
We had an exciting week at Elk Neck Elementary School! The kindergarteners had a great time on their field trip to Milburn Orchards, and we raised $900 for student activities with Bubble Gum Day!
We have several events to look forward to this week. The second grade is looking forward to their field trip on Monday, 9/30/24, to Fair Hill Nature Center. The trip is rain or shine, so second graders should dress accordingly. Tuesday, 10/1/24, is Custodial Appreciation Day! We are incredibly thankful for our custodial team and their care of our school to ensure that students and staff have a great place to learn and work. Volunteer Training will occur on Wednesday, 10/2/24. Volunteers must attend one training either at 9:30 a.m. or 4:30 p.m. Mrs. Cook is looking forward to our first Donuts for Grownups for the year, which will take place on Thursday, 10/3/24, at 8:00 a.m. The importance of attendance will be discussed as well as routines that will help your child be ready for school. Friday, 10/4/24, is Early Dismissal Day! Elementary students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m.
Free and reduced meal benefit applications are available online at https://www.myschoolapps.com/Application. Meal benefit applications must be filled out each school year. If you received meal benefits last school year and you have not filled one out for this school year, your child’s benefits will expire on October 14, 2024. If you need a paper application you can pick one up at the school's main office, however we strongly suggest that you fill out the application online. Please be sure to fill out an application before October 14th. If you have received a NOTICE OF ELIGIBILITY FOR FREE MEALS letter you DO NOT need to apply as your student has already been approved. If you have any questions regarding meal benefits or anything related to school meals, please contact the Food & Nutrition office at (410) 996-6257.
As always, we are here to serve our families, students, teachers, and the community. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don't ever hesitate to contact us. Please reference the Who To Contact document to reach the staff member who can best respond to your need.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ashlee Groce, Principal
Mrs. Kimberly Whitney, Asst. Principal
Attendance Goals
DID YOU KNOW?
• Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
Based on the 23-24 attendance data, we set two goals for our school in the area of attendance. Check it out!
2023-2024 ENES Attendance Data
59 students (13.8%) were chronically absent (absent 18 or more school days regardless of the reason)
1 student (.2%) was habitually truant (36 or more days of unexcused absences)
69 students (16%) were at risk for being chronically absent
Monthly attendance average of 92.2%
Goal 1: Elk Neck Elementary will improve the monthly attendance by 2%.
Goal 2: Elk Neck Elementary will increase the percentage of students who are not considered chronically absent by 5%.
We will begin reporting weekly attendance data in October!
