Conservation Students Take Second and Third Place At Oneida County Envirothon
Students from the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES Conservation program participated in the Oneida County Soil and Water Conservation District’s 26th Annual Envirothon on May 7 at the Utica Zoo. Thirty-five teams from 10 Oneida County school districts competed in the event, including two teams from the OHM BOCES Career and Technical Education Center, coached by Conservation instructor Mr. Phil Lacelle.
The OHM BOCES junior team took second place overall in the competition and was comprised of John Campbell (Holland Patent), Hunter Daviau (Whitesboro), Tyler Hale (Sauquoit Valley), Delanie Pritchard (Holland Patent) and Hunter Schachtler (Waterville). Each team member received a $600 scholarship for their second place victory.
The senior team, comprised of Nathan Craver (Holland Patent), Isabelle Famolaro (Whitesboro), Aidan Pawelek (Whitesboro), Yanna Shinkarevich (New York Mills) and Jenna Tycznski (Westmoreland) placed third overall in the competition. Each team member received a $400 scholarship for their third place victory.
During the day-long, hands-on event, students tested their knowledge and understanding of New York State’s natural resources. The students rotated through five outdoor stations that each focused on a different subject area and worked as a team to complete test questions and problem-solving exercises.
The Envirothon is an environmental and natural resource conservation problem-solving, team building and leadership experience and competition for high school students (grades 9-12 or ages 14-19) across the United States, Canada and China. Incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) principles, experiential learning and hands-on outdoor field experiences, the Envirothon fosters student learning in the areas of equatic ecology, forestry, soils and land use, wildlife and current environmental Issues.
Students are challenged to develop critical thinking skills to create inventive solutions to the complex local and global environmental and natural resource issues facing our world today. With the Envirothon, students are empowered to educate others, take action in their local communities, pursue higher academic study in environmental disciplines, and to work toward careers in the environment, natural resources and conservation.
Advisory Council/Consultant Committees Meeting
At the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison (OHM) BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) Advisory Council/Consultant Committees meeting on May 7, the Culinary classes of Chef Courto and Hoffmeister served appetizers to guests before the commencement of the meeting.
The CTE Advisory Council is composed of business and industry, labor, public agency, education and community representatives who provide counsel, direction and assistance to career and technical education development and activities relating to community and employment trends, which is more important now than ever with increasing demand for CTE programs.

Radio Station Sticker To Feature Design By ADMP Student
Local radio station Bug Country will once again be sporting a static sticker designed by a student in the Advertising Design/Multimedia Productions (ADMP) program at the Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES.
For the third consecutive year, Bug Country partnered with seniors in the ADMP program for the station’s annual static sticker contest. Seniors were given specific criteria by radio station executives and asked to come up with their own design for a Bug Country sticker. Students presented initial drafts of their stickers and received feedback from radio station employees, then used those suggestions to complete their final drafts.
Four finalists were chosen and the local community was asked to vote for their favorite sticker design on Bug Country’s website. The winner of the contest was Robert Wilkinson (Utica City School District), whose design depicts the Bug Country logo along with the silhouette of trees and horses walking toward a barn. Stickers featuring the winning design have been produced and will hopefully be spotted on a car bumper soon!
Congratulations to each of the finalists, and congratulations to Robert on creating the winning design!
The Career and Technical Education Center
Career and Technical Education Center programs focus on preparing students for employment, careers or post-secondary education through the development of technical and 21st-century skills. Working with state-of-the-art equipment, students apply theory and knowledge to a wide range of real life work assignments in shops and laboratories. In addition to technical skills, students learn critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, positive employment attitudes, job seeking skills, familiarization with related career opportunities and college readiness.
