Superintendent's Message
SPS community,
Today we welcomed Carlton teachers back to work and next week all teachers, 9th graders at SHS and Carlton 1st-5th grade students return to school! As we prepare to open our doors, I want to share a few updates with you:
- By Monday morning, you will receive my annual back to school letter with important updates for the start of school.
- Back to School forms will be sent home via ParentSquare on Monday.
- Transportation information will be sent home to families no later than mid-day Monday. You will receive a text, email and ParentSquare notification detailing information about your child's bus routes if they take a bus to and from school. You will also receive an email with a link for our new mobile parent application for tracking your child's bus.
- Our Back to School Fair is scheduled from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 28th at Saltonstall. All are welcome to attend!
- Don't forget to turn in summer reading logs during the first two weeks of school to earn a chance to ride to school with Derby the SPD police dog.
It is getting real! We can't wait to welcome your children back to school! Enjoy the last weekend of August!

Back to school is just around the corner.
Menus for breakfast, lunch, the fresh fruit and vegetable program and dinner are now available for the full month of September.
September is an exciting month of delicious food holidays. We will be celebrating National Cheeseburger Day Monday, Sept. 16, and National Quesadilla Day Wednesday, Sept. 25 with a student favorite meal: Birria Pulled Turkey Quesadilla.
Sunday, Sept. 15 marks the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month. To honor the culture, we’ll be serving special meals inspired by Hispanic cuisine. On Tuesday, Sept. 17, enjoy roasted chicken seasoned with Chef Margarita’s sazon de abuela. On Thursday, Sept. 26, try our new dish: Pastalaya – a whole grain pasta with chicken in a Cajun red sauce.
The Salem Food and Nutrition Services Department looks forward to another great year of incorporating diverse, flavorful, and locally-sourced menu items. Students and staff can now submit their own family recipe of cultural significance to recipes@salemk12.org. Each month, the FNS team will select one recipe and will invite the student who submitted the recipe to taste test the recipe with their school’s kitchen staff. This initiative offers a fantastic opportunity to explore new cuisines and learn more about the diverse backgrounds of our school community.
Our first Panorama Family/Caregiver Survey is still available and we encourage your input. We value your opinion as you are an important part in the life of your scholar and many others and a valued member of the SPS community. We would be honored if you would take a moment of your time to share your feedback with us.
The survey will be open from June 14-Aug. 31, 2024 and should take no more than 15 minutes. We encourage you to take one survey per student you care for, if you would like to. The survey is available in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Haitian Creole.
Should you have any questions or need support please reach out to us at 978-740-1225 or email lassade@salemk12.org

As we move closer to the start of school, we urge our families to review the Salem Public Schools guidelines for Covid-19, which were updated March 26, 2024.
Salem Public Schools developed its guidelines with guidance provided by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control. These protocols may be revised as needed in collaboration with the Salem Board of Health and SPS health advisors.
Covid-19 test kits are available free of charge at each of our 11 schools' main offices.
Virtual Backpack
Welcome to the Virtual Backpack. This is a space where we will place items that in the past may have been a flyer in your student's backpack from friends and partners to SPS.
Download the ParentSquare App
A reminder that ParentSquare is the district platform for communication. You will receive communication from the district, your school, and your student's classroom all in one space. You can communicate 1-to-1 with teachers, sign up for parent-teacher conferences, and more.
This is the primary communication platform for all Salem Public Schools. All messages and alerts come through ParentSquare and the app makes 1-to-1 communication with your student's teachers and signing up for guardian/student conferences a breeze. If you are not receiving messages from ParentSquare or if you are having trouble, contact your school's front office. You can visit www.parentsquare.com for more information.
