St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 2 | WEEK 7 | 30 MAY 2024
“O, Lord.
Give us the strength to not worry about things we cannot control.
Guide us in developing a sense of appreciation. We look up to you for motivation.
Keep our mind at peace and help us prevent it from wandering off.
Remind us to chant your name. Shelter us in your glory.
In Jesus we trust. Amen.”
Dear Parents and Carers
Many thanks to the staff for supervising our students in the VANS carnival on Tuesday. The day was extremely wet and the students are to be commended on the way that they participated in the very wet conditions.
Just a timely reminder to families that if there are issues regarding students at St Columba’s, it is not up to parents while on the school grounds to approach children other than their own and discuss issues or reprimand. Parents need to advise a classroom teacher and or the leadership team who will then investigate and act if deemed necessary.
I would ask that parents and carers check their child’s iPad and talk to their children about appropriate and inappropriate use of the messaging service and websites. This year the school has been doing some work in classes on what is appropriate and not appropriate particularly with the use of social media. I would remind families that there are settings on iPads etc that families can set to ensure that children are not using them inappropriately. Families should also be monitoring what their child/ren are accessing when using iPads. If you have any questions regarding iPad settings, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Chatt.
We are progressing with the grotto area around the Mary MacKillop mural and hope to have it completed by the end of next term. It will be an area where classes can go and reflect quietly or pray. The seating was donated by Camp Australia, and I would like to thank them for their support.
A reminder that the school reports will be available on Wednesday, 26 June.
God bless and take care.
Allen McMahon
Principal

CAPSS VANS Inter School Carnival
Year 5 and 6 students attended the CAPSS VANS Inter School carnival on Tuesday at the Success Sporting Fields. The students played in either Volleyball, AFL, Netball or Soccer against 6 other schools. All teams competed at an exceptional level displaying wonderful enthusiasm and team spirit. All teams reported that the students participated well and improved throughout the carnival. We are proud of our students' efforts, displaying their abilities over various types of sports and being excellent representatives of St Columba's Catholic Primary School.
I, Mr Chatt, would like to thank the staff for preparing the students and assisting to coach and/or umpire on the day. I also thank the parents who volunteered their time to help out at trainings and at the carnivals.
Well Done!
Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC)
The Department for Education Child protection in schools, early childhood education and care services policy states that ‘all children and young people in the department’s preschools and schools will access the approved child protection curriculum’.
Keeping Safe is the Child Protection Program that all CEWA schools follow.
The KS:CPC teaches children and young people to recognise abuse, tell a trusted adult, understand what is appropriate and inappropriate touching and ways of keeping themselves safe.
Themes
The curriculum is based on two main themes which are presented through topics and activities.
· Theme 1: We all have the right to be safe
· Theme 2: We can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.
Focus Areas
The two themes are explored through four Focus Areas, which are examined in growing complexity in accordance with the age of the learners.
1. The right to be safe
2. Relationships
3. Recognising and reporting abuse
4. Protective strategies.
More information can be found on the KS:CPC website: http://tiny.cc/KSCPC-ParentCarerInfo.

Pastoral Care Group
The St. Columba’s Pastoral Care Group has been running for over 8 years and aims to provide caring support within our school community. It provides confidential, appropriate and timely assistance for families in their time of need.
The Pastoral Care Group is able to provide:
1. Meal support to those in need – providing fresh meals as required.
2. Pick-ups/drop offs to and from school.
3. Canteen vouchers can be arranged to ease the burden of lunches.
This Christian example allows our students to witness their parents serving and supporting others in our community.
The Pastoral Care Group has two points of contact:
1. School Office (Amy Venturini / Andrea Creek) 08 6436 9500 (admin@stcolumbassp.wa.edu.au)
2. Louise Valerio 0430 922 184 (louise_valerio@hotmail.com) – Year 6, Year 2 and Kindy parent
Class Reps usually seek contact with the Pastoral Care Group when a need is identified.
A list is held of volunteers who are willing to assist with this confidential service.
When needed, volunteers are contacted by Louise.
CALLING FOR VOLUNTEERS!
The Pastoral Care Group relies on the wonderful support of volunteers within our school community. If you would like to be on the volunteer list (to cook a meal or two throughout the year, if needed) – please contact Louise or the School Office.
Your assistance would be very much appreciated!
